A Marvellously Informative Resource For All Pianists!
By Raymond Vacchino
As a pianist, teacher, adjudicator and examiner I ocassionally find myself frustrated by the fact that I can't remember off hand the name, key, opus number or a particular fact about a work when I absolutely need too!
Maurice Hinson once again comes to the rescue for people like myself and others! The Guide is wonderfully laid out and provides pertinent facts about nearly 2,000 solo piano compositions by well known and the lesser-known composers. The information is specific and to the point, without all the non-essential material which is exactly what I need when grasping for information in the middle of a competition or when asked a question in a workshop about an obscure work or composer!
All bases are covered in this edition. For students, new, and even seasoned teachers, Hinson provides precise, formidable insight on a composer's complete compositions, as well as pianistic, interpretative, stylistic and characteristic approaches.
Overall, "The Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire", is virtually a "Pianist's Bible."

The Best Guide To Solo Piano Literature
By Franklin Howell
"Essential," "Indispensable," "Invaluable," "Crucial." Those are a few of the labels often applied to this remarkable book. Currently in its third edition, Maurice Hinson's "Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire" is still the most sought-after reference for essentially all solo piano music of significance. Outside professional private instruction and a reliable piano technician, every serious piano student needs three tools on hand: a piano, piano music, and this guide. Hinson's reputation as both an effective and productive musicologist is firmly established in this work.
The book is structured into two primary sections. The main section, Part 1, is alphabetically categorized by composer. Each referenced work includes a list of available publications, their editors, and the composition's date if known. Hinson includes a brief yet vivid description of the style or character of a given piece and, in most cases, a comment or two on some of the technical requirements one can expect for preparatory purposes. The guide is also a reliable reference to books for further study of a given work. Both logic and common sense went into organizing the massive collection of data. The guide also proves sensibly formatted for sections of large volume by a single composer, such as the collections of Bach or Chopin, for example.
Part 2 is an impressive reference to published anthologies, subdivided into four categories. The first category, "General," lists publications of character pieces, impressionistic works, and any number of "Heinz 57" types. There is a "General: Contemporary" section for twentieth century collections. In addition to Bartók, Prokofieff, and others from the earlier years of the century, one can also find reference to works by Boulez, Kohlenz and Harbison, to name a few. The third category, coined "Tombeaux, Hommages," is a brief list of collections of works composed in honor of another composer. The fourth category, the largest of the four, is a comprehensive reference to piano collections by nationality. It is subdivided alphabetically.
The book includes an appendix of historical recital programs by Rubinstein, Busoni and Gabrilowitsch. There is also an impressive group of indexes for referencing under different category types.
The entire collection of works are broadly lumped into four technical grades. The labels are "Easy," "Intermediate (Int.)," "Moderately Difficult (M-D)," and "Difficult (D)." It may help the amateur, when focusing on technical problems, to limit the comparisons to other works of the same genre or by the same composer, rather than cross-comparing any two works that happen to have the same grade.
For example, Franz Liszt's "Transcendental Etudes" is marked "D" for difficult; likewise György Ligeti's "Etudes for Piano" is graded "D." Since the primary technical demands for these two works are as different from each other as the works themselves, the grade is really little more than a signal that both works will require extensive work and patience beyond most anything marked M-D. Naturally, the serious piano student will pursue further research for works of this magnitude anyway, but Hinson's commentary often provides key information for what lies ahead. In Liszt's etude collection, for instance, the player will confront "double-note tremolos," and a "melody with rapid tremolo accompaniment in the same hand." For Ligeti's set, the performer faces "polyrhythmic, simultaneous progressive layers of tempo" and a command in dynamics ranging between ffffffff and pppppppp. Hinson's carefully worded descriptions often prove crucial in matters such as this. It pays to note them.
This massive project is both focused and thorough. Hinson has delivered a beneficial service for the serious piano explorer. Even casual browsing proves enlightening.
One request for the next edition: since the "Tombeaux, Hommages" category is so small, and only a few homages happen to be in collections, perhaps a comprehensive list of all published piano homages would make a worthy addition. Sincere thanks from this aging amateur pianist and music-lover goes to Mr. Hinson, the publisher, and to all teachers and professionals involved in the making of this excellent handbook.

"New" edition, but mostly unchanged
By pianomac
The Third Edition of "Hinson" (Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire) has perhaps 120 new entries, but is otherwise unchanged. I looked for the entry for Leo Ornstein as an example, and indeed his date of death was not included. (He was born, probably, in 1892). I assume that, similarly, there was little revision done on previous entries.

Hinson's opinions are usually authoritative, if occasionally annoying. For pianists interested in expanding their repertory, this is an essential resource. One problem is that the coverage is focussed on available published editions. Today a huge range of formerly out-of-print piano music is available for free download from [...] This site did not exist when previous editions came out. Publishers, and Amazon, may not approve, but a guide intended to be comprehensive should cover this resource.

The Book and the Sword (The Martial Arts Novels of Louis Cha), by Louis Cha, Graham Earnshaw, Rachel May, John Minford

In the Book and Sword, Louis Cha revives the legend about the great eighteenth-century Manchu Emperor Qianlong which claims that he was in fact not a Manchu but a Han Chinese as a result of a "baby swap." The novel is panoramic in scope and includes the fantastical elements for which Cha is well-known: secret societies, kungfu masters, a lost desert city guarded by wolf packs, and the mysterious Fragrant Princess.

The Book and the Translator
By Graham A. Earnshaw
The Book & The Translator

By Graham Earnshaw

Once upon a time, in 1973, I landed in Hong Kong and sat in the lobby of the Mandarin Hotel and looked at a notice under the glass of the coffee table with identical information in both English and Chinese, laid out as numbered points. I looked at the English "1,2, 3", then at the Chinese squiggles, and saw that one stroke was 1, two strokes 2 and ... three strokes 3! I can read Chinese! It was a simple path from that moment to the translation of the kungfu novel "The Book & The Sword", now published by Oxford University Press.

The novel was written by author Louis Cha, who occupies a position in modern Chinese literature equivalent to that of Charles Dickens, Ian Fleming and Tom Clancy combined. He is a giant, and unfortunately a lonely giant. There are no other authors of his stature in modern Chinese popular literature.

The Book and the Sword is a story that virtually every Chinese person knows, involving kung fu secret society struggles against the Manchu court, the beautiful but tragic Fragant Princess, whose tomb stands outside Kashgar, and the war between the Manchu armies and the Muslim peoples of what is now western China.

It was Cha's first book, serialised in 1955 under his pen name Jin Yong in the Hong Kong newspaper that he founded, Ming Pao. Louis Cha (Jin Yong), is a famous media person, and one of the top authors in the Chinese world. His novels have had a huge impact on the whole of Chinese society and culture, and have been adapted many times for TV, film, audio cassette, strip cartoon and even computer games. He is probably the most-pirated author of all time.

Cha's novels find favour with all levels of Chinese society, from the university professors who savour his command of the Chinese language, to kids who just love the fight scenes. From a western perspective, they provide a window into the Chinese world, revealing its essence through the dreams and fantasies that make up whatever it is to be Chinese. The equivalent, in other words, of Tolkein's success in "Lord of the Rings" in tapping into the sources of northern European culture.

Book & Sword's story has a panoramic sweep which takes as its base a few unbeatable themes - secret societies, king fu masters, the sensational rumour so dear to Chinese hearts that the great Manchu emperor Qian Long was in fact a Chinese and not Manchu. It also mixes in the exotic flavours of central Asia, a lost city in the desert guarded by wolf packs and the unforgettable Fragrant Princess, who ate flowers and exuded a scent that every Chinese man would love to inhale. Me too.

Translating the book took around four years, and the fight scenes were by far the hardest part to get right. It inevitably involved some simplification. But I was as faithful to the spirit of the original as I could be. I took the view that I could omit or simplify, but not add and Mr Cha agreed with my approach.

When I translated the book, Chinese culture on the world scene basically came down to Bruce Lee. Now, the world has turned, "Heroes" and "Croaching Dragon" are major international box office draws, and kung fu culture has infiltrated western culture to a significant degree - the Matrix series is the proof.

(p.s. the Amazon system requires a star rating on all review entries, otherwise I would not have been so immodest as to rate this book)

Story slow to start, but good when it gets going
By FRANCIS PETTIT
This a kung fu adventure story full of fights, beautiful ladies, complicated romantic relationships, political intrigue and travel in China's wild west. The story takes a looong time to get going (about 300 pages out of 510.) When it finally gets going, it's quite good and hard to put down. The adventure gets more compelling, and at the same time it becomes something of a tragic love story.

This book shares some of the virtues and flaws of the other major Louis Cha/Jin Yong novel translated into English, "The Deer and the Cauldron." The virtue: both books are excellently and idiomatically translated by Graham Earnshaw, with a nice glossary to help you with all the character names. These two books are currently the ONLY novels by Louis Cha translated into English (except for one notoriously bad translation by someone else, and some comic book adaptations.)

The flaw: like "The Deer and the Cauldron" which took about 250 pages to get going, after which the next 1,250 pages (or whatever) were simply un-put-down-able, with this novel, the first 300 pages just introduce the characters and have repetitive fight scenes. It shows its origins as a serial in a newspaper. When the real story gets going, here it's only 210 pages to the end, alas, but it does leave you wanting more.

At first you think the novel is about a teenage girl who learns kung fu in secret and travels in disguise as a boy. Then you think it's about this or that member of the Red Flower Heroes, a secret society of patriots in Qing Dynasty China dedicated to overthrowing the Manchu government. They engage in numerous repetitive battles. Several couples are introduced and they gradually pair off, each romantic pairing clearly signalled.

Finally the story centers on Helmsmen Chen, the leader of the Red Flower Society, and his, um, complicated romantic relationships. While travelling in China's Muslim Wild West, he falls in love with Huo Qingtong, a Uighur (Turkic) princess of extraordinary brains, courage, and kung fu skills. But, due to a romantic misunderstanding, he thinks she's already taken. By coincidence he meets her sister, the Fragrant Princess Hasli, the most beautiful woman in the world. Through various misunderstandings, the virtuous Helmsmen Chen winds up with both sisters in love with him. I'm not giving anything away to say that this kind of thing cannot end well, and the story has a tragic aspect.

The latter part of the story can be quite exciting, with lost cities in the desert, hidden passages, that kind of thing. As you'd expect for a newspaper serial, there are implausible parts and logical discrepancies. If there's one thing about this novel that makes it inferior to "The Deer and the Cauldron", it's that Helmsman Chen is so virtuous, he's boring. I kept hoping he would show some lust or jealousy or something.

There is also a lot of political intrigue; the Manchu Emperor is secretly a Chinese by birth, and the Red Flower Heroes hatch a plan to exploit this fact to drive out the Manchu oppressors. Anyone who knows Chinese history knows how that will turn out. So, this story does not have a happy ending, but it is tied up nicely.

Graham Earnshaw deserves a lot of credit for translating this important Chinese author. Hey Graham, when you gonna translate "The Eagle-Shooting Heroes"?

another good book for my collection
By A Customer
this is what i expect from Louis Cha, an involving storyline and lots of kung fu stuff that i can't understand but still enjoy...
this book has both.
it's a great book, but i wish it were longer, cuz when i get into a book i don't want it to end. even "outlaws of the marsh"(2000+ pages) seems short when you're done reading it.
here are some recommendations.
"Musashi"
"Taiko"
"Outlaws of the Marsh"
& "The Deluge"

Families, Schools, & Communities ~ Building Partnership for Educating Children, 5th Edition
    By Jane Jones
Families, Schools, and Communities: Building Partnership for Educating Children, 5th Edition is a book that I borrowed from a friend that used it as a college text. I read the chapters on Family Diversity, Roles and Experiences of Parents and Establishing and Maintaining Collaborative Relationships completely and the rest of the book I read parts of each chapter to help me with building better parent relations of the children that I teach. I found the book a good refresher and found several new ideas and different prospective of looking at building relationships with parents to help my students. This not a novel but a good reference book for teacher's and a college students entering teaching. It is written with the college student in mind but worked fine as a refresher for me, as an experienced teacher.

    Interesting Book
    By Amazon Customer
I bought this book because it was required for my class. It is well written and actually interesting. It gives strategies to help the school, community and parents work together. I did not give it all five stars because I wish that it had given even more strategies for working together. The authors covered the three areas of the home, school and community efficiently and completely. It is the most unbiased text in this area of study that I have found. Even homeschooling was covered in an unbiased and positive manner, accurately listing the pros and cons of the practice. Overall I was surprised to find a text that was actually readable and informative. While I wouldn't sit down and read this for pleasure, if I had to read a school text, this would be one I would choose to read.

Moralizing the Corporation: Transnational Activism and Corporate Accountability, by Boris Holzer

`The argument of this book is so powerful and convincing because it focuses on global subpolitics: the corporate (ir)responsibility, the power of its critics, and the consuming citizen. This shift of perspectives and its sophistication makes Moralizing the Corporation a must-read for anyone interested in the dynamics of globalization.'
    - Ulrich Beck, University of Munich, Germany

`Moralizing the Corporation offers a multi-disciplinary analysis of the conflicts between transnational corporations and transnational advocacy groups. The book is theoretically sophisticated and full of interesting and nuanced empirical findings that generate new knowledge about the relationship between politics and markets. It views transnational corporations as quasi-public institutions and explains their vulnerability to the "non-state authority" of political consumers and protest groups. Holzer develops theory on transnational subpolitics and corporate reflexivity and should be read by scholars and activists alike.'
    - Michele Micheletti, University of Stockholm, Sweden

This insightful book examines how transnational corporations respond to the challenges of anti-corporate activism and political consumerism. In prominent cases involving major corporations such as Nestlé, Nike and Royal Dutch/Shell, transnational activists have successfully mobilized public opinion and consumers against alleged corporate misdemeanours. Campaigns and boycott calls can harm a corporation's image but, as this book points out, public scrutiny also gives corporations the opportunity to present themselves as responsible and accountable corporate citizens who subscribe to the very norms and values propagated by the activists.

Academics, scholars and postgraduate students in international business management, organization studies, social movement studies and political sociology will find this book invaluable.

Trust and Skepticism: Children's selective learning from testimony (Current Issues in Developmental Psychology)From Psychology Press

Children learn a great deal from other people, including history, science and religion, as well as language itself. Although our informants are usually well-intentioned, they can be wrong, and sometimes people deceive deliberately. As soon as children can learn from what others tell them, they need to be able to evaluate the likely truth of such testimony. This book is the first of its kind to provide an overview of the field of testimony research, summarizing and discussing the latest findings into how children make such evaluations – when do they trust what people tell them, and when are they skeptical?

The nine chapters are organized according to the extent to which testimony is necessary for children to learn the matter in question – from cases where children are entirely dependent on the testimony of others, to cases where testimony is merely a convenient way of learning. Chapters also consider situations where reliance on testimony can lead a child astray, and the need for children to learn to be vigilant to deception, to ask questions appropriately, and to evaluate what they are told. With an international range of contributors, and two concluding commentaries which integrate the findings within a broader perspective of research on child development, the book provides a thorough overview of this emerging sub-field.

Trust and Skepticism will be essential reading for researchers, academic teachers and advanced students working in the areas of cognitive development and language development, and will also be of great interest to educationists concerned with nursery and primary education.

    Review

"Trust has been a central issue in developmental psychology since its inception. In the past two decades, there has been explosive growth in research on the development of trust in childhood. This expertly edited book by Robinson and Einav brings together contributions from some of the key players in this growing body of research on the issue. The book provides timely reviews of evidence regarding various central issues related to the development of trust. It thus represents a milestone towards our fast growing scientific knowledge of how children learn to trust. The book covers issues concerning the development of trust broadly and from multiple perspectives. It is an essential resource for researchers and students who are interested not only in trust, but also social cognition in development." - Kang Lee, Department of Human Development and Applied Psychology, University of Toronto, Canada

"Trust and Skepticism presents a timely collection of empirical and theoretical essays on how children learn from testimony. Findings in this emerging field are critical to help us understand how humans learn. Written by experts in the field, this volume covers central topics like epistemic vigilance, trust, willingness to conform, and learning about unobservable entities in science and religion." – Helen De Cruz, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford, UK

"Trust and Skepticism succeeds in presenting a comprehensive and comprehensible collection of research into children's selective trust in testimony. The volume identifies many factors that alter a child's decision to trust testimony, and each chapter is well-reasoned and supported by a wealth of empirical research and references" - Angela D. Moore, Journal of Youth and Adolescence

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER & NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE

Straight from the front line of urban America, the inspiring story of one fiercely determined teacher and her remarkable students.

As an idealistic twenty-three-year-old English teacher at Wilson High School in Long beach, California, Erin Gruwell confronted a room of “unteachable, at-risk” students. One day she intercepted a note with an ugly racial caricature, and angrily declared that this was precisely the sort of thing that led to the Holocaust—only to be met by uncomprehending looks. So she and her students, using the treasured books Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl and Zlata’s Diary: A Child’s Life in Sarajevo as their guides, undertook a life-changing, eye-opening, spirit-raising odyssey against intolerance and misunderstanding. They learned to see the parallels in these books to their own lives, recording their thoughts and feelings in diaries and dubbing themselves the “Freedom Writers” in homage to the civil rights activists “The Freedom Riders.”

With funds raised by a “Read-a-thon for Tolerance,” they arranged for Miep Gies, the courageous Dutch woman who sheltered the Frank family, to visit them in California, where she declared that Erin Gruwell’s students were “the real heroes.” Their efforts have paid off spectacularly, both in terms of recognition—appearances on “Prime Time Live” and “All Things Considered,” coverage in People magazine, a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley—and educationally. All 150 Freedom Writers have graduated from high school and are now attending college.

With powerful entries from the students’ own diaries and a narrative text by Erin Gruwell, The Freedom Writers Diary is an uplifting, unforgettable example of how hard work, courage, and the spirit of determination changed the lives of a teacher and her students.

The authors’ proceeds from this book will be donated to The Tolerance Education Foundation, an organization set up to pay for the Freedom Writers’ college tuition. Erin Gruwell is now a visiting professor at California State University, Long Beach, where some of her students are Freedom Writers.

    From Library Journal
When Gruwell was a first-year high school teacher in Long Beach, CA, teaching the "unteachables" (kids that no other teacher wanted to deal with), she discovered that most of her students had not heard of the Holocaust. Shocked, she introduced them to books about toleranceAfirst-person accounts by the likes of Anne Frank and Zlata Filopvic, who chronicled her life in war-torn Sarajevo. The students were inspired to start keeping diaries of their lives that showed the violence, homelessness, racism, illness, and abuse that surrounded them. These student diaries form the basis of this book, which is cut from the same mold as Dangerous Minds: the outsider teacher, who isn't supposed to last a month, comes in and rebuilds a class with tough love and hard work. Most readers will be proud to see how these students have succeeded; at the end of their four-year experience, the Freedom WritersAas they called themselves, in honor of the Freedom Riders of the 1960sAhad all graduated; Grunwell now works at the college level, instructing teachers on how to provide more interactive classes for their students. Freshman Year

    Fall 1994

    Entry 1 -- Ms. Gruwell

Dear Diary, Tomorrow morning, my journey as an English teacher officially begins. Since first impressions are so important, I wonder what my students will think about me. Will they think I'm out of touch or too preppy? Or worse yet, that I'm too young to be taken seriously? Maybe I'll have them write a journal entry describing what their expectations are of me and the class.

Even though I spent last year as a student teacher at Wilson High School, I'm still learning my way around the city. Long Beach is so different than the gated community I grew up in. Thanks to MTV dubbing Long Beach as the "gangsta-rap capital" with its depiction of guns and graffiti, my friends have a warped perception of the city, or L B C as the rappers refer to it. They think I should wear a bulletproof vest rather than pearls. Where I live in Newport Beach is a utopia compared to some of neighborhoods seen in a Snoop Doggy Dogg video. Still, TV tends to blow things out of proportion.

The school is actually located in a safe neighborhood, just a few miles from the ocean. Its location and reputation make it desirable. So much so that a lot of the students that live in what they call the "'hood" take two or three buses just to get to school every day. Students come in from every corner of the city: Rich kids from the shore sit next to poor kids from the projects . . . there's every race, religion, and culture within the confines of the quad. But since the Rodney King riots, racial tension has spilled over into the school.

Due to busing and an outbreak in gang activity, Wilson's traditional white, upper-class demographics have changed radically. African Americans, Latinos, and Asians now make up the majority of the student body.

As a student teacher last year, I was pretty naive. I wanted to see past color and culture, but I was immediately confronted by it when the first bell rang and a student named Sharaud sauntered in bouncing a basketball. He was a junior, a disciplinary transfer from Wilson's crosstown rival, and his reputation preceded him. Word was that he had threatened his previous English teacher with a gun (which I later found out was only a plastic water gun, but it had all the makings of a dramatic showdown). In those first few minutes, he made it brutally clear that he hated Wilson, he hated English, and he hated me. His sole purpose was to make his "preppy" student teacher cry. Little did he know that within a month, he'd be the one crying.

Sharaud became the butt of a bad joke. A classmate got tired of Sharaud's antics and drew a racial caricature of him with huge, exaggerated lips. As the drawing made its way around the class, the other students laughed hysterically. When Sharaud saw it, he looked as if he was going to cry. For the first time, his tough facade began to crack.

When I got a hold of the picture, I went ballistic. "This is the type of propaganda that the Nazis used during the Holocaust," I yelled. When a student timidly asked me, "What's the Holocaust?" I was shocked.

I asked, "How many of you have heard of the Holocaust?" Not a single person raised his hand. Then I asked, "How many of you have been shot at?" Nearly every hand went up.

I immediately decided to throw out my meticulously planned lessons and make tolerance the core of my curriculum.

From that moment on, I would try to bring history to life by using new books, inviting guest speakers, and going on field trips. Since I was just a student teacher, I had no budget for my schemes. So, I moonlighted as a concierge at the Marriott Hotel and sold lingerie at Nordstrom. My dad even asked me, "Why can't you just be a normal teacher?"

Actually, normalcy didn't seem so bad after my first snafu. I took my students to see Schindler's List in Newport Beach, at a predominately white, upper-class theater. I was shocked to see women grab their pearls and clutch their purses in fear. A local paper ran a front-page article about the incident, describing how poorly my students were treated, after which I received death threats. One of my disgruntled neighbors had the audacity to say, "If you love black people so much, why don't you just marry a monkey?"

All this drama and I didn't even have my teaching credentials yet. Luckily, some of my professors from University of California-Irvine read the article and invited my class to a seminar by the author of Schindler's List, Thomas Keneally. Keneally was so impressed by my students that a few days later we got an invitation to meet Steven Spielberg at Universal Studios. I couldn't believe it! The famous director wanted to meet the class that I had dubbed "as colorful as a box of Crayola crayons" and their "rookie teacher who was causing waves." He marveled at how far these "unteachable" students had come as a junior class and what a close group they had become. He even asked Sharaud what "we" were planning to do next year as an encore. After all, if a film does well, you make a sequel--if a class surpasses everyone's expectations, you . . .

. . . dismantle it! Yep, that's exactly what happened. Upon my return from Universal, the head of the English department told me, "You're making us look bad." Talk about bursting my bubble! How was I making them look bad? After all, these were the same kids that "wouldn't last a month" or "were too stupid" to read advanced placement books.

She went on to say, "Things are based on seniority around here." So, in other words, I was lucky to have a job, and keeping Sharaud and his posse another year would be pushing the envelope. Instead, I'd be teaching freshmen--"at risk" freshmen. Hmm . . . not exactly the assignment I was hoping for.

So, starting tomorrow, it's back to the drawing board. But I'm convinced that if Sharaud could change, then anyone can. So basically, I should prepare myself for a roomful of Sharauds. If it took a month to win Sharaud over . . . I wonder how long it's gonna take a bunch of feisty fourteen-year-olds to come around?

    Read with her autobiography
    By E. Spira
I showed my sophomore English students the movie after one of their state testing days when they needed a break. They LOVED it; they insisted we play the line game, and asked me why I didn't work two part-time jobs to take them to dinner at a fancy hotel. Truly though, the film made an impact. I bought a few copies of Freedom Writers' Diary, and those were borrowed instantly. I also borrowed a copy of Erin Gruwell's memoir, Teach with your Heart, which really tells the story behind the stories in the Diary. All these products were wonderful, and as someone who teaches grade-level students who are hard to reach with anything remotely literary, this story struck a chord with them and for once, I had kids ASKING to write. Students saw bits of their own lives in the work, and the importance of education in pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps. This book is definitely recommended for anyone in education, or who simply wants a little inspiration to achieve success in their own lives.
