Presents a clear picture of the propagation of optical waves in layered media and teaches the reader how to design and analyze optical devices using such media. Starting from the simplest case of plane wave propagation in homogeneous media, the author introduces a new matrix method for studying the optical properties of multilayer structures which consist of isotropic materials. He then describes propagation in anisotropic layered media and in inhomogeneous layers, guided waves, the coupling of modes, and the optical properties of superlattices and quantum wells. Materials covered include dielectrics, crystals, and absorbing media such as metals and semiconductors. Many applications are described, including spectral filters, Bragg relectors, Fabry-Perot etalons, antireflection coatings, ellipsometry, gradient index imaging rods, birefringent filters, waveguide couplers, and x-ray mirrors and oscillators.

The present treatment bridges the gap between theory and practice by means of numerical examples based on real-life situations. Only classical electrodynamics is used in dealing with the interaction of light with matter, except in the last chapter on quantum wells. Included are tables containing indexes of refraction, extinction coefficients, birefringence, and other important material properties.
About the Author
POCHI YEH obtained his PhD in physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1977 for his research on nonlinear optics and optical properties of superlattices. Before he joined the electrical and computer engineering faculty at University of California–Santa Barbara in 1989, Dr. Yeh was the principal scientist of the Optics Department at Rockwell International Science Center in Thousand Oaks, California. Dr. Yeh is known for several important contributions in optics, including the development of a matrix method for optics of layered media; the theory of photorefractive phase conjugators; and the theory of wave mixing in nonlinear media.

The best book on layered media.

This is a fantastic book for scientists and engineers dealing with EM waves in stratified/layered media. It covers the simple case and anisotropic cases. Clearly presents both Fresnel equations, Airy sums, multilayer transfer matrices, and about everything else you want when dealing with these materials. Is also very practical and presents equations clearly, it is less theoretically oriented so it is great for piratical use, giving you what you need instead of just the starting point. If you deal with EM waves and dielectrics - just buy the book.

My research is on waves in layered media and this book has become an invaluable desk reference. I would highly suggest this book for understanding the matrix formalism of wave propagation through periodic media.
