Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life, by Steve Martin

The riveting, mega-bestselling, beloved and highly acclaimed memoir of a man, a vocation, and an era named one of the ten best nonfiction titles of 2007 by Time and Entertainment Weekly.

In the mid-seventies, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. This book is, in his own words, the story of “why I did stand-up and why I walked away.”

Emmy and Grammy Award–winner, author of the acclaimed New York Times bestsellers Shopgirl and The Pleasure of My Company, and a regular contributor to The New Yorker, Martin has always been a writer. His memoir of his years in stand-up is candid, spectacularly amusing, and beautifully written.

At age ten Martin started his career at Disneyland, selling guidebooks in the newly opened theme park. In the decade that followed, he worked in the Disney magic shop and the Bird Cage Theatre at Knott’s Berry Farm, performing his first magic/comedy act a dozen times a week. The story of these years, during which he practiced and honed his craft, is moving and revelatory. The dedication to excellence and innovation is formed at an astonishingly early age and never wavers or wanes.

Martin illuminates the sacrifice, discipline, and originality that made him an icon and informs his work to this day. To be this good, to perform so frequently, was isolating and lonely. It took Martin decades to reconnect with his parents and sister, and he tells that story with great tenderness. Martin also paints a portrait of his times—the era of free love and protests against the war in Vietnam, the heady irreverence of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the late sixties, and the transformative new voice of Saturday Night Live in the seventies.

Throughout the text, Martin has placed photographs, many never seen before. Born Standing Up is a superb testament to the sheer tenacity, focus, and daring of one of the greatest and most iconoclastic comedians of all time.

Amazon.com Review
At age 10, Steve Martin got a job selling guidebooks at the newly opened Disneyland. In the decade that followed, he worked in Disney's magic shop, print shop, and theater, and developed his own magic/comedy act. By age 20, studying poetry and philosophy on the side, he was performing a dozen times a week, most often at the Disney rival, Knott's Berry Farm. Obsession is a substitute for talent, he has said, and Steve Martin's focus and daring--his sheer tenacity--are truly stunning. He writes about making the very tough decision to sacrifice everything not original in his act, and about lucking into a job writing for The Smothers Brothers Show. He writes about mentors, girlfriends, his complex relationship with his parents and sister, and about some of his great peers in comedy--Dan Ackroyd, Lorne Michaels, Carl Reiner, Johnny Carson. He writes about fear, anxiety and loneliness. And he writes about how he figured out what worked on stage.

This book is a memoir, but it is also an illuminating guidebook to stand-up from one of our two or three greatest comedians. Though Martin is reticent about his personal life, he is also stunningly deft, and manages to give readers a feeling of intimacy and candor. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs collected by Martin, this book is instantly compelling visually and a spectacularly good read.

Three Bonus Deleted Passages from Steve Martin's Born Standing Up

On Returning to Disneyland
Ten years later, after the Beatles, drugs, and Vietnam had changed the entire tenor of American life, I returned to the magic shop at Disneyland and stood as a stranger. As I looked around the eerily familiar room another first came over me, a previously unknown emotion, one that was to have a curious force over me for the rest my life: the longing tug of nostalgia. Looking at the counter where I pitched Svengali Decks and the Incredible Shrinking Die, I was awash with the recollection of indelible nights where the sky was blown open by fireworks and big band sounds drifted through trees strung with fairy lights. I remembered my youth, when every moment was crisply present, when heartbreak and joy replaced each other quickly, fully and without trauma. Even now when I visit Disneyland, I am steeped in melancholy, because a corporation has preserved my nostalgia impeccably. Every nail and screw is the same, and Disneyland looks as new now as it did then. The paint is fresh, and the only wear allowed is faux. In fact, only I have changed. In the dream-like world of childhood memories, so often vague and imprecise, Disneyland remains for me not only vivid in memory, but vivid in fact.

On Meeting Diane Hall
During the day, I attended Santa Ana Junior College, taking drama classes and pursuing an unexpected interest in English poetry from Donne to Eliot. I would occasionally assist on a college stage production--never appearing in one--as a member of the crew. Years later I was looking through a box of memorabilia and noticed a silk-screened playbill of the musical Carousel, May, 1964, which listed me as a stagehand. The lead actress was Diane Hall. Something connected and I remembered that Diane Keaton's name was once Hall, (hence, Annie Hall). I confirmed with her that she was in that production. Neither of us remembers meeting the other, yet we must have worked in proximity. More evidence that I was a wallflower. Decades later, we ended up "making love" on the floor of a movie set on Father of the Bride.

On the Kennedy Assassination
One Friday in 1963, I had finished a class and was about to drive to Knott's Berry Farm for the afternoon shows when I saw a clump of agitated students across the campus. I asked someone what was going on. "They're saying that the president's been shot."

I drove across town to Knott's and punched radio buttons. I could hear the scheduled programs clicking off and being replaced by live broadcasts. Assassination seemed so ancient and inconceivable, I was sure that someone would soon correct the erroneous report. President Kennedy died that day and I didn't know that news could be taken so personally by a nation. Sitting backstage, watching the Birdcage's black-and-white TV drone out the increasingly grave report, we were all mute. We assumed the performance that night would be canceled, but as show time neared, word came down that we were going on. We couldn't fathom why; we believed no one would show up, much less enjoy us. I still can't explain the psychology, why the very full house that night was able to roar with laughter. The obvious must be correct: our silly show was providing some kind of balm that soothed the ache.

In 2003 I hosted the Oscars on the particular weekend that the United States invaded Iraq. The news was grim and just hours before the show I flipped on the TV and saw a report, subsequently proven false, that our captive soldiers were being beheaded. I quickly turned the TV off, sick. I knew, from my experience forty years earlier with the Kennedy assassination, what my job was, and I harbored a secret knowledge that the audience would laugh. I also felt that soldiers who might be watching would be tuning in to see the Oscars and all its hoopla, not a cheerless comedian doing what he doesn’t do best. I decided to acknowledge the circumstances early in the show and then get on with the jokes. The academy had announced that the show would "cut back on the glitz." I walked out for the opening monologue, took a look around the stage at the dazzling, swirling staircases, mirrored curtains and polished floor, and simply said, "I'm glad they cut back on the glitz." It got a laugh of relief and the show could go on.

Pure Drivel
Praise for Born Standing Up
"[A] lean, incisive new book about the trajectory of [Martin's] life in comedy...Born Standing Up does a sharp-witted job of breaking down the step-by-step process that brought Steve Martin from Disneyland, where he spent his version of a Dickensian childhood as a schoolboy employee, to both the pinnacle of stardom and the brink of disaster...tightly focused...Born Standing Up is a surprising book: smart, serious, heartfelt and confessional without being maudlin." --Janet Maslin, The New York Times

"Absolutely magnificent. One of the best books about comedy and being a comedian ever written." --Jerry Seinfeld, GQ

"The writing is evocative, unflinching and cool. When Martin takes a scalpel to his life, what you feel is the precision of the surgeon more than the primal scream of the unanaesthetized patient...Born Standing Up is neither fanfare nor confession. It gives off a vibe of rigorous honesty. With lots of laughs." --Richard Corliss, Time Magazine

"A spare, unexpectedly resonant remembrance of things past…Martin's one true subject is the evolution of his comedy--the transcendent moments...A smart, gentlemanly, modest book…winning." --Jeff Giles, Entertainment Weekly, EW Pick: A

"A charming memoir tracking what the great comic characterizes as his 'war years.' Martin offers an eloquent and exacting account... [and] approaches his subjects with generosity, warmth and integrity." --Kirkus Reviews

"Sure to delight fans and create new ones." --Laura Mathews, Good Housekeeping

"What fun to discover the humble beginnings of some of his iconic personas...inspiring." --Rachel Rosenblit, Elle

"The archetypical story of the underdog's rise and a particularly American story...beautifully written, honest, engaging, and quietly brave." --Frederic Tuten, Bomb Magazine

"Son, you have an ob-leek sense of humor." --Elvis Presley

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Martin recounts his tense childhood, his desire to become a magician and his segue into standup comedy in his surprisingly serious and eloquently written memoir. Martin's memories are perceptive and emotionally honest even though he confesses early on that while writing this book, he felt some events in his life seemed to happen to someone else and I often felt like a curious onlooker. Martin's writing is spare, concise and evocative, and he's a smooth and limber reader, an assured and relaxed, seasoned raconteur. Martin runs through some of his classic comedy routines to give listeners an idea of how they developed into his anti-comedy sets (humor without punch lines). Enjoyment while performing was rare, he reveals. Enjoyment would have been an indulgent loss of focus that comedy cannot afford. After 18 years of studying, refining and finally succeeding, Martin ends the book when he gives up the solitary standup life in favor of a collaborative life making films. Martin also provides the banjo music that plays between chapters.

From Bookmarks Magazine
It’s hard to believe that it’s been a quarter century since Steve Martin packed the props and walked away from a stunningly successful turn in stand-up. His career as a popular actor, a critically lauded writer (Shopgirl), and a dramatist has since flourished, of course. But readers hoping for vintage Martin can get a quick fix with Born Standing Up. While the memoir may not be as salacious as fans expect or as riotously funny as an arrow through the head, Martin writes with the wisdom of experience (don’t miss a remarkable meeting with Elvis Presley after a 1971 show) as he recounts his development into one of the most popular and original comedians of his generation.

Not A Hollywood Tell-All But Rather A Sneak Peek Into The Hard Work Roller Coaster of a Professional Comedian
By Drevik
I bought the audio version with the e-version and it felt as if he walk speaking specifically to me. It gave it a much more intimate feel. I highly recommend the professional reading addition.

The book itself is a collections of stand-up memories and developmental notes on how Mr. Martin began his professional career as an onstage performer. It goes through a bit of the highs and low without going for the cheap "tell all" trash of sex, drugs, and back room deals that seems more like a low class ploy to sell books. What little there is of that in the book is quickly and quietly glossed over. He speaks of his career and gives his nuances on how he moved from an unknown to having more fame and less privacy. The professional reading is also punctuated with mini banjo solos.

He does not go much into his movies beyond "The Jerk." Most of his private life is still very much private, although he does go a bit into his relationship with his immediate family. There is not a lot of mentions of other famous people beyond a few tiny mentions here and there. It really is merely focusing on career development without throwing any of his past coworker under the proverbial bus.

For me, he came off as a hard-working professional with a lonely somewhat secluded life that makes me want to reach out and be his friend. However at the same time, it made me know that since his fame that he has erected a wall between his public persona and his private life. I do not see him as capable to have a friendship with the "common" folk anymore, as he will always be unable to trust anyone without expecting ulterior motive, which is a shame.

Steve Martin continues to impress!
By Benjamin E Yerys
Born Standing Up was a joy to read. Another reviewer likened the experience of reading this book to what it would be like if you stumbled upon Steve Martin at a bar and could have an extended conversation with him. I think it's a perfect description! I learned so much but I was left wanting to know more about some topics that he just gave us a teaser. I loved learning about his approach to comedy, and his experience of coming to grips with fame. Steve Martin is a renaissance man and his talent shines through in this book. I enjoyed hearing about his successes and was touched by his thoughtful introspection on his personal relationships. Steve continues to impress even after all these years.

okay; not great
By Caraculiambro
I enjoy Steve Martin but do not consider myself such a big fan of him. Not a big enough fan, at any rate, to read a autobiography of him.

The reason I did read this autobiography was that I had heard that Steve Martin, despite his wild and crazy demeanor onstage, is in fact morbidly shy when not in front of the floodlights, and in fact spends most of his spare time poring over the Greek and Latin classics. I found this rumor to be intriguing enough to warrant picking up this short autobiography.

For an autobiography it is. The dust jacket presents the book as though it were Martin's chronicles of the years he spent as a stand-up comic, and how and why he got into and out of this business.

Sure, the book does that. You won't be left with any questions on that head.

But it's more than that: Martin goes into his family life, his private life, and even his education. So it's really just a short autobiography.

And it's not funny. I don't know if you're expecting it to be humorous writing, but, aside from mentioning jokes, it's pretty straight-faced throughout. Here's a sample:

"The TV also brought into my life two appealing characters named Laurel and Hardy, whom I found clever and gentle, in contrast to the Three Stooges, who were blatant and violent. Laurel and Hardy's work, already thirty years old, had survived the decades with no hint of cobwebs. They were also touching and affectionate, and I believe this is where I got the idea that jokes are funniest when played upon oneself." (p. 18)

All in all, Martin's book is a swift read: he sticks to his plan and the reader is never bored.

I have two complaints:

1. Steve Martin does an awful lot of name-dropping here. So unless you plan on making frequent stops to Wikipedia and YouTube to figure out who he's talking about, you're going to have difficulty with many of his topical references from the `70s. (And I'm from the `70s!)

2. Martin seemed to have some great material on his remote and unsympathetic father. Those are the parts of the book I'm going to remember the most. Take this:

"My father . . . died . . . and afterward his friends . . . . told me how enjoyable he was, how outgoing he was, how funny and caring he was. I was surprised by these descriptions, because the number of funny or caring words that had passed between my father and me was few. He had evidently saved his vibrant personality for use otuside the family. When I was seven or eight years old, he suggested we play catch in the front yard. This offer to spend time together was so rare that I was confused about what I was supposed to do. We tossed the ball back and forth with cheerless formality." (p. 19)

It seems he could have written an entire book about that time.

Anyhow, regarding the Greek and Latin thing, which induced me to read this thing in the first place: it doesn't seem to be true. Martin majored in philosophy at a third-rate California college before switching to English, but that seems to be the extent of it.

- eating and drinking for top performance in training and racing,

- finding the time and energy to fit training into real life,
- tracking your progress, and
- planning and implementing your race-day strategy.

Author Pete Pfitzinger was the top American finisher in the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Marathons. He won the 1984 Olympic Trials by outkicking former world record holder Alberto Salazar. Pfitzinger, now an exercise physiologist, won the San Francisco Marathon twice and finished third in the 1987 New York City Marathon. Co-author Scott Douglas is a well-known writer on running, a former editor of Running Times, and a competitive runner. The duo, co-authors of Road Racing for Serious Runners (Human Kinetics, 1999), have experience, credibility, and an ability to present scientific information in a readable manner.

Exceeded My Expectations In Every Way
By Earl W. Damron
I have done three marathons over the last 15 years. I'm not what I would call a "marathoner", but I've always enjoyed the challenge and reward of the distance. Unfortunately, I've never enjoyed much success at the distance. I've never felt like I was properly prepared and my marathons showed it. My finishes have always been weak and my times, in the 3:40 to 4:10 range, have been disappointing.
With a 4th attempt at a marathon coming up this June, I purchased this book in the hopes that I could finally turn in a good marathon and qualify for the Boston Marathon.
This book has exceeded my expectations in every way. Every chapter is full of information and examples of things I've either failed to do in the past, done that I shouldn't have, or done at the wrong level of intensity. Exercise physiology, rather than running lore or other worthless information, packs each chapter. The authors do a wonderful job of explaining what happens to your body when you do things right and when you do things wrong. You come away not only understanding what you should do, but why you should do it. You learn why various types of running help and why those same types can take away from your goals if done improperly or at the wrong time/level. You also get an entire book that focuses on running 26.2 miles, meaning that you don't have to skim through chapters on the 5K, 10K, or other distances to pick out the information that is meaningful to you. Along these same lines, the authors talk about why certain types of training that are very useful for runners in other distances really shouldn't be a focus in your marathon preparation (and, of course, why they shouldn't). The book covers various types of running workouts, nutrition, hydration, recovery, race tactics, running economy, and training schedules. For the various workouts, it does a wonderful job of explaining each type of workout, what it does to aid you in achieving your goal marathon, and why.
I actually considered waiting until after my marathon in June, just so I could expound the virtues of this book with concrete evidence that what it has to say works, but I just couldn't wait. If you're at all interested in going from an average marathoner to an advanced marathoner, this is the book you need. I've read the entire thing in about a week (which is saying something for me) and plan to begin reading it again today, just to make myself a "cheat sheet" this time of the many things in the book that loudly spoke to me. Of the 5 books I've owned on preparing for the marathon, this is the best one by far!

Great book if you want to train seriously for a personal best
By B. Davie
I really can't say enough good things about this book. I'll start by saying that having just followed the "below 70 miles per week" training plan pretty faithfully, I just lowered my personal best in the marathon by 19 minutes, breaking 2:50 for the first time. I also actually enjoyed running the marathon, right to the finish, did not hit "The Wall", and sustained my highest weekly mileage ever without sustaining injury. I attribute a lot of this success to this book.

You need to be fairly serious about training to benefit from this book - the training plans are best suited for those who are willing to do 60 miles per week or more. (The 70+ mile per week plan contains a section "When 93 miles per week just aren't enough"). But the book places a strong emphasis on recovery and nutrition, which I think were critical in allowing me to increase mileage without getting hurt, sick, or run-down. And you certainly don't need to be elite - just willing and able to find the time and energy for a fairly large amount of training.

There are a lot of things to get right in a marathon, and almost all of them seem to be addressed here: all the different types and intensities of training, how to make sure you recover on your "easy" days, how to replenish carbohydrate stores after long runs, how to taper, race day strategy, carbo-loading, hydration, and even how to recover intelligently in the month after the race. Impressively, the book manages to cover all these aspects while being readable and quite easy to comprehend and remember.

A lot of ideas in this book are quite similar to Daniel's Running Formula (another good book) but tuned specifically for the marathon and made a bit easier to digest because it only covers that one event.

Advanced Marathoning is a winner
By Bill Corcoran...
The dynamic duo of Pete Pfitzinger, renowned exercise physiologist and two- time Olympian, and Scott Douglas, former editor of the Running Times, have teamed up to write the latest and greatest text about marathoning. Quite simply, this book is a must read; the authors have produced a theoretically sound, easy-to-read, and entertaining manual for anyone seeking to run (i.e. as opposed to "finish" or "run-walk") a sub-four hour marathon. Advanced Marathoning has a number of outstanding features:
Numerous easy-to-read, day-by-day, training plans. From peak mileage at 55 miles per week over 12 weeks to 93 miles per week over 24 weeks, nine different marathon schedules are laid out and explained with daily detail.
A Multiple Marathons training plan. For runners who wish to tackle more than the standard yearly spring and fall marathon plan, the book details methods for racing marathons as close as four weeks apart.
A sidebar in each chapter which profiles a world class marathoner. These tales from the trenches illustrate how some of the principles of marathon training are applied in real life.
Practical advice about how to balance high commitment marathon training with the rest of a "normal" life. Since not all of us can make a living winning prize money in road races, the authors present practical tips for incorporating high mileage training into the rest of your busy life.
An entertaining writing style. The best line of the book comes on page 205 where the authors warn about trying to run back-to-back marathons in less than 4 weeks:
Your main concern should be about recovery, recovery, and more recovery not only from your first marathon but also from the lobotomy that led you to come up with this plan. Despite its many strengths, the book has two minor drawbacks: Hill training is glossed over. Hills are an essential part of almost any marathon training program. The authors acknowledge this, but they aren't specific about where, when, and how hills can be incorporated into a training plan.
The core strength training and flexibility training sections are brief. Specific diagrams illustrating some of the exercises written about would have been very helpful. These drawbacks, however, pale in comparison to all of the "good stuff." To repeat, this book is a must read.

A good data scientist knows how to do something really well, but a great data scientist can do "something of everything." From raw data all the way to shining in front of C-level executives, a great data scientist has the skills to architect data systems, build applications, perform modeling and machine learning and wrap up the results in a clear (and quickly iterable) manner. From data models to ETL to databases to distributed algorithms and learning, this book has you covered.

While many resources for Java (and data science) exist, none of them combine the two, and especially not at a level where sophisticated concepts are demonstrated clearly and in simplest terms. Data Science with Java marries the two in a practical way.

Excelent approach to technical analysis in Forex for newbies like me
By Victor Rossetti
Boris Schlossberg in this book covers the basics of technical analysis in a way digestible for new traders, explains basics like candlestick patterns, and indicators like moving averages, Bollinger Bands, RSI, among others. Spoiler alert: In the last pages he presents practical trading setups and strategies, along with some very interesting money management approaches.
After reading this book, readers should consider also reading the books by Kathy Lien (Mr. Schlossberg partner in BKForex.com), which cover fundamental analysis, swing and day trading and mixed technical/fundamental strategies.

Have we lowered our standards?
By J. Schneider
Many of the recent books on FX have been of such poor quality that I wonder where our priorities are. Publishers, authors and readers seem to have lowered the bar both in terms of the quality of the presentation and in terms of rigor. Are we so impatient that we cannot wait until the text is proofed for errors or until the research is adequately validated and sourced? Are we just lazy? This is the question on my mind as I finish Schlossberg's book.

While it may be an achievement for him personally, it is unfinished and I suspect even he must agree. While I do acknowledge the paucity of books on the FX spot markets -- especially thorough and well written books -- there is no excuse for this one. The two concepts that stood out in this book, and the concepts the author seemed most eager to sell, were the scaling in approach and the Bollinger Band "bands." Guess what readers! You can learn all you need to know about Schlossberg's approach to both by reading his articles on Investopedia and MoneyTec. (He published his article on "bands" more than two years go. The rest of his book is just filler...and covered in more detail and more accurately in other books. You can, literally, find free and very well documented information on the internet that covers all 10 chapters!

He also doesn't give credit where credit is due, presenting some concepts without ackowledging the debt owed to his intellectual benefactors and giving the impression (I'm sure without realizing it) that he is the originator. This has also become popular in the industry -- taking credit when none is deserved. (I won't name names.) Specifically, the idea of Bollinger Band "bands" is not original. His only contribution is putting quotes around the "bands". (I have personally been using them since 2000, and I was taught by someone else who had been using them since 1998.) You can find a more diverse discussion of them on any of the major FX forums, but you might have to dig a little. (Don't be lazy!)

But these are only my pet peeves. And I am peeved at the author a bit. He is, as he says, a currency strategist for FXCM. He has also referred to himself as a profesional trader in the past. But titles can mean anything these days and I am left wondering whether he really trades for a living. All the speaking and seminar tours -- and he does a lot -- leave little time to actually trade consistently. On any time frame but the weekly and monthly. If you are not trading consistently, then you are simply not trading. And if you are writing about trading, then you had better be trading consistently yourself. Or retired from trading successfully.

My doubts go further. The model he presents is statistically very dangerous and requires very precise entry and exit techniques in order to enable the risk model to work. Beginning traders should simply not try this model and instead look for something that has a better reward to risk profile and that has more forgiving entry and exit tactics. He claims the countertrend trades on the Bollinger Band "bands" model he presents have a high probability of success. This might be true, but traders must remember that he has provided little in the way of precise entry and exit rules and even less on the money and risk management side of the equation. (And all of a few sentences on how to determine whether this style of trading is suitable for you.) And since it is impossible that he is trading consistently, I wonder if he can really say with an acceptable measure of statistical certainty that his model has been or will be profitable over time. He would probably be better off not disclosing this information for legal reasons, but acknowledging its importance and explaining its use would go a long way toward making the book credible. If a new trader jumped in and started trading this model based on the information presented in the book, he or she would merely be "eyeballing it." You can still succeed this way, but it's more a matter of luck than skill.

He has not presented essential statistics to indicate that he employs the model profitably -- yet he gives the impression he is a profitable trader. In undertaking the exploration of any trading model, I have to know a few things first:

(1) What is the likely win / loss ratio over a minimum of 100 trades?

(2) What is the average profit and average loss?

(3) What is the expectancy of the model?

(4) What time frames and time periods is the model likely to perform best?

(5) What is the maximum drawdown I can expect?

Granted, Schlossberg's approach is discretionary and his focus is technical (and so is mine), but the lack of any informaton on the measures above -- or their importance to formulating trading models -- has me worried. Which brings me to a question similar to the first. Are we so impatient about the process of trading -- market research and model selection, self-assessment, and risk management -- that we can't wait to jump into the trade? If we are, I suspect we will all lose.

And that is my rating for this book. A loss of $40. Booker's claim that this is the only book one needs for technical analysis is pure rubbish. (They often speak together at FX expos and Booker himself is selling FX education courses and, in general, Rob's response to everything is "brilliant!" He's a very positive guy.) In addition to the above, the charts are poorly presented and some of the patterns, particularly the head and shoulders patterns, are not necessarily valid in the "classical" sense. And the whole thing just feels like a series of previously published articles loosely strung together -- which is in fact what some of the chapters are. Don't be fooled. This book will not give you the skill you need to carve out a small but profitable niche in the global currency market. (It might give you the confidence, but that and a buck fifty will get you a cup of coffee and maybe a date with the barrista.)

You're best bet, unfortunately, is to keep reading books on general trading -- in particular the books on stocks and futures. They still present the best information for our buck fifty. (What you need to know about FX specifically is already on the internet and free of charge.) Try Elder's "Entries and Exits" to get a feel for what it's like to be a lonely trader. Read Murphy's "Technical Analysis", Bulkowski's "Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns", Bollinger's "On Bollinger Bands", and Nison's "Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques". These are the books that a new trader should start with, along with Steenbarger's "Enhancing Trader Performance" (forget about his first book unless you just like reading about trading psychology) and Gandevani's "How to be a Successful Trader" (best yet on practical trading psychology, though full of typographical errors). When you read them, sit in front of the charts and actively participate in your learning. When you're done, read a few more on specific indicators that appeal to you. Maybe check out other paradigms like market profile and point and figure charting. Trading is a way of life and you will spend a lot of time just doing research and reading more books on specific technical and fundamental perspectives. Choose your sources wisely. Be patient.

Don't waste you're time reading Schlossberg. Do your due diligence on researching the best brokers for retail trading (hint: it isn't FXCM) and know the structure and conventions of trading the FX spot market and the use of leverage BEFORE you put real money into an account. Even the newbie would be better off reading something else. Some newbies here obviously disagree, but they're newbies. (And like I said before, don't be lazy!)

Simply put, the author owes us more for our $40. He is not alone of course. Just about every author who has published on spot FX is guilty. And we deserve better.

A lot of filler. An intro to forex book.
By ForexTech
You have to wait till chapter 10 before you see something unique to the book. The other chapters are spent talking about what you can read up on most forex websites. The last two chapters 9&10 are spent on know thy self, analysis, setups and strategy. The setups/analysis is mainly based on bollinger bands. Not exactly keen on Bollinger bands, so my interest was nil. If you are a complete beginner to forex, this book may be useful..maybe.

The text addresses many topics not typically found in books at this level, including:

  • Bound state solutions of quantum pendulum
  • Pöschl–Teller potential
  • Solutions of classical counterpart of quantum mechanical systems
  • A criterion for bound state
  • Scattering from a locally periodic potential and reflection-less potential
  • Modified Heisenberg relation
  • Wave packet revival and its dynamics
  • Hydrogen atom in D-dimension
  • Alternate perturbation theories
  • An asymptotic method for slowly varying potentials
  • Klein paradox, Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox, and Bell’s theorem
