Review of Business in Action

The book is the one that I needed but overall, I am very disappointed. It was listed under "Good" condition and when it came to me, the back over as well as the whole index was torn in half. The book looked like it was a chew toy for a dog. The other books that I ordered came just fine so maybe it was just the seller of this book that falsely advertised that the book was new. But I'm still not happy.

About the Author

Pascal Baudar is a professional forager, wild food instructor, and a self-styled “culinary alchemist” based in Los Angeles. His locally sourced wild ingredients and unique preserves have made their way into the kitchens of such star chefs as Ludo Lefebvre, Josiah Citrin, Ari Taymor, Michael Voltaggio, and Chris Jacobson.

Over the years, through his weekly classes and seminars, he has introduced thousands of home cooks, local chefs, and others to the flavors offered by the wild terroir of southern California.

He has served as a wild food consultant for several TV shows including MasterChef and Top Chef Duels. He has been featured in numerous TV shows and publications, including Time magazine, the Los Angeles Times, L.A. Weekly, and the New York Times.

In 2014, he was named one of the 25 most influential tastemakers in L.A. by Los Angeles magazine.

A well-considered review

The anti-foraging viewpoint is based on the belief that foraging can strip ecosystems of important foods for wildlife. One can extrapolate that this viewpoint is meant to protect and preserve the environment.
In my review, I would like to address whether the negative reviews of others based solely on an anti-foraging viewpoint are warranted, and, as a larger point, to discuss whether this viewpoint, expressed by negatively reviewing this book solely based on its overall topic, helps or harms the environment.
I have thoroughly read every page of this book, shared it with my children, and made several recipes, some many times. I believe that environmentally conscious people should support this book because:
1. The author dedicates a section to foraging responsibly. He writes about his sadness at seeing denuded plants after restaurant suppliers have unethically sourced an ingredient. He encourages readers to consider the impact before foraging.
2. Many of the negative reviews encourage people to plant gardens rather than forage. The author writes that he plants his favorite food sources, and he encourages readers to do the same.
3. Foraging leads to an increased desire to protect the environment because humans are primed to enjoy 'hunting' in changing environments and they create strong memories based on food.
4. Once you get hooked on wild plants, you'll want to create space for them everywhere. Suddenly it's perfectly logical to want to rip out your water-hogging grass lawn and replace it with wild mint.
5. Some ideas in this book have no impact on animal life. For example, I learned to make my own sea salt. I like the taste so much I doubt I'll ever buy salt again. No birds or insects were impacted by my salt, and one less product is being manufactured and shipped for me.
5. Many ideas in this book are from plant material that is not scarce. I learned to make pine needle tea, and no one is going to miss the pine needles I took because there are so many. I began cooking and making fertilizer with local seaweed, which piles up and rots on our beaches. I also learned to eat every part of the nopales, which is also so plentiful here that huge patches rot unused in the fall.
6. The author advocates eating insects as a source of protein and heme iron. You can't get more local or sustainable than that.
7. The author advocates using rocks as plates and cooking tools - which removes even more products from the product stream, further benefitting the environment.

I could continue, but I believe I've shown that the author is in fact very concerned with ethical foraging, and also that ethical foraging can result in environmental benefits.

this creation brought the author in direct contact with Nature and it evidently made an indelible mark on him

Although The New Wildcrafted Cuisine is an exceptionally beautiful presentation of an exploration into the natural world for unique culinary delights, it is also a primary account of one's creative interrelationship with the plants of one's bioregion. This work goes beyond any previous wild plant foraging guide or wild food cookbook not only as a 'next step', but by leaps and bounds. The spirit of this book is conveyed through its unique interpretations of the author's local flora creating through the ancient principles of food alchemy and preservation and an intimacy developed with Place. As a bioregional herbalist and forager, I feel this is not only essential to deeper understanding of plants, but is inevitable in our return to the "Eden" of our home landscape. Further, I feel that one cannot begin to comprehend "stewardship" of the landscape short of participating in it. What I call the "Museumification" of our landscape in which people presumably "Leave No Trace" (how is that physically possible? It simply is not) and view Nature from afar essentially prevents us from fully participating in the life around us in a way that cannot be conveyed through words, guidebooks, or university courses. I can see that the work behind this creation brought the author in direct contact with Nature and it evidently made an indelible mark on him and his life's work. Responsible action is assured for all those who develop intimate relationship with their homeland. Allowing for mistakes, we must each follow our calling down this path and bring this enhanced awareness back to our community through our work. I personally have not met a forager who has clear-cut a forest for timber, or bladed desert for a new road or new development, or sprayed toxic chemicals across 1,000's of acres of our national forest to eradicate undesirable plants. Yet each day these activities continue on, sanctioned, and "in our best interest." The modern forager, in best practices, is seeking to re-establish harmonious relationship with her surroundings. This book does that, ambitiously.
Instead of scorn for an irresponsible endeavor, I see light in a direction of responsible interrelationship with our natural environment when I read through The New Wildcrafted Cuisine. A work unlike any other. A work I would like to create some day, emerging from my own terrain.

A Locavore's Alchemy

Be not under any illusion that this is a foragers hand book and field guide. I suggest that for that purpose you should research and locate a guide book quite specific to your area and for those in Australia I would recommend "The Weed Foragers Handbook" by Adam Grubb and Annie Raser-Rowland as a good starting place and there are many more of course.
Rather, this book inspires the cook, passionate in seasonal local fare, to take a more personal and profound journey. The powerful evocative qualities of aromatics a just as key as the taste sensations.This book has quite opened my eyes to the tiny, tiny ingredients, like lerp sugar in these cookies. Or how about pine pollen and seeds from mustard and dock? Lots of ferments, shrubs, pickling, brews and extractions.Seed sensations, powders, rubs, smokes and even goat cheese made with fig sap as rennet.

What I particularly appreciate about this book is the way it is sectioned into seasons.

WINTER; The forest time
SPRING: The green time
SUMMER: The berries and fruits time
FALL/AUTUMN: The seeds time

Each section explores the various ingredients of the time and recipes are included and techniques explained. There is also quite a lot of thumbnail pictures in each section visually identifying what is commonly seen in the landscape (of Southern California of course). While some are area specific I have been delighted to find many cross overs. Would I make half of what's in this book? Unlikely, but it's definitely got me excited and thinking further afield and asking myself how will explore and expand my local produce. In the late 1850s and early 1860s, the attention of the Catholic and Protestant religious communities around the world focused on a few small settlements of French Canadian immigrants in northeastern Illinois. Soon after arriving in their new home, a large number of these immigrants, led by Father Charles Chiniquy, the charismatic Catholic priest who had brought them there, converted to Protestantism. In this anthropological history, Caroline B. Brettell explores how Father Chiniquy took on both the sacred and the secular authority of the Catholic Church to engineer the religious schism and how the legacy of this rift affected the lives of the immigrants and their descendants for generations. This intriguing study of a nineteenth-century migration of French Canadians to the American Midwest offers an innovative perspective on the immigrant experience in America.

Brettell chronicles how Chiniquy came to lead approximately one thousand French Canadian families to St. Anne, Illinois, in the early 1850s and how his conflict with the Catholic hierarchy over the ownership and administration of church property, delivery of the mass in French instead of Latin, and access to the Bible by laymen led to his excommunication. Drawing on the concept of social drama—a situation of intensely lived conflict that emerges within social groups—Brettell explains the religious schism in terms of larger ethnic and religious disagreements that were happening elsewhere in the United States and in Canada. Brettell also explores legal disputes, analyzes the reemergence of Catholicism in St. Anne in the first decade of the twentieth century, addresses the legacy of Chiniquy in both the United States and Quebec, and closely examines the French Canadian immigrant communities, focusing on the differences between the people who converted to Protestantism and those who remained Catholic.

Occurring when nativism was pervasive and the anti-immigrant Know-Nothing Party was at its height, Chiniquy’s religious schism offers an opportunity to examine a range of important historical and anthropological issues, including immigration, ethnicity, and religion; changes in household and family structure; the ways social identities are constructed and reconstructed through time; and the significance of charismatic leadership in processes of social and religious change. Through its multidisciplinary approach, Brettell’s enlightening study provides a pioneering assessment of larger national tensions and social processes, some of which are still evident in modern immigration to the United States.

About the Author
Archon Fung is Associate Professor of Public Policy at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. His research examines the impacts on public and private governance of civic participation, public deliberation, and transparency. He has authored three books, including Empowered Participation: Reinventing Urban Democracy (2004); three edited collections; and more than fifty articles appearing in journals such as the American Political Science Review, Political Theory, Journal of Political Philosophy, Politics and Society, Governance, and Journal of Policy and Management.

Mary Graham is a Research Fellow at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Her research focuses on the use of information strategies to foster social change, the politics of public information, innovative approaches to health and safety regulation, and new trends in environmental policy. She is the author of Democracy by Disclosure (2002) and The Morning After Earth Day (1999). Graham has written for the Atlantic Monthly, Financial Times, Environment magazine, Issues in Science and Technology, Brookings Review, and other publications.

David Weil is Professor of Economics and Everett W. Lord Distinguished Faculty Scholar at Boston University School of Management. His research spans the areas of labor market policy, industrial and labor relations, occupational safety and health, and regulatory policy. He has published widely in these areas and has also served as advisor to the U.S. Department of Labor, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and other government agencies. He has written two other books (including the award-winning A Stitch in Time: Lean Retailing and the Transformation of Manufacturing, 1999) and his articles have appeared in numerous journals including the RAND Journal of Economics, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Harvard Business Review, and the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management.

The issue of transparency is not new. The history of concealment, secrecy and disclosure is part of the modern history of this nation and the globe. However, given financial debacles beginning with the Great Depression, including Enron, World Com, and the banking financial crisis there is much to understand. Full Disclosure redefines transparency in terms of politics and economics and is tremendous for understanding the issues that effect everyone's life.

An excellent way to convey in a layperson way implications of data transparency

I used this book primarily to communicate to non-technically non-mathematically inclined individuals the pros and cons of "data transparency" as an organizational initiative. As this kind of transparency becomes the norm, I think this is a great start for those that would like to consider why a comprehensive understanding is needed before simply making data public.

Win-win book for ordinary citizens and policymakers

"Full Disclosure: Perils and Promise of Transparency" (Fung, Graham, and Weil 2007) is undoubtedly a first-rate book on a regulatory tool that is dynamic in nature. The authors acknowledge the promising, but sometimes perilous transparency(information disclosure) tool as a complement to the existing standards and market based policies in order to redress certain policy problems. The authors nicely interplay the factors of politics, economics, and cognitive powers of varying stakeholders to analyze the development and sustainability of existing and future domestic and global transparency policies. This book is not only a page turner, but a power analytical framework for analyzing the effectiveness and efficiency of a given transparency policy, the likes of financial disclosure laws and the global reporting of infectious diseases.

The authors present their arguments and evidence in a concise and understandable format which will allow ordinary citizens with little or no understanding of economics and governance to find this book a powerful guide and hopefully; after reading, become active participants in the movement for greater transparency in both the public and private sectors. Thus, this is a win-win book for both citizens and policymakers alike.

Lastly, the authors critically examine the advances in information technology like that of the Internet and related technologies such as instant messaging, online blogs, and online book reviews (here), which led to the rise of a third generation transparency systems that differs from the right-to-know and targeted transparency policies, the first and second generation transparency policies, respectively, because of the collaborative information sharing aspects of the new system.

On a side note, this book is right in time as there is a current debate on the medical care quality and cost disparity in the state of Massachusetts, US, which underscores the importance of transparency policies to improve a service quality that have might long term health care impacts for patients. All in all, this one of a kind book will serve as a guide for many generations to come.

With regards to Joel M. Kaufman May 8th, 2007's comment on the authors' limited awareness of corruption at different government agencies, it is possible that the previous commenter did not take into account the multi-layered definition of the politically correct term: "diverging interests of policymakers and other stakeholders of information disclosure," which the authors have reiterated on numerous occasions using similar phrases.

A Solid Sanskrit Grammar

This is probably the best all-round textbook for learning Sanskrit. Its closest
competitors are Goldman's "Devavanipraveshika" and Coulson's "Teach Yourself
Sanskrit". Maurer's work improves upon both in several ways: 1.It treats Sanskrit
in its Indo-European linguistic context, which will be a reason that many will
come to the study of the language. Previously Mayrhofer's "Sanskrit Grammar" or
Burrow's "Sanskrit Language", neither of which are pedagogic, had to be consulted
by a student interested in historical linguistics. 2.It presents the basic
grammar thoroughly with plentiful vocabulary and practice material for the
beginner. The reasons that prevent me from giving it five stars are these:
1. Price 2. Somewhat uninspired selection of readings. After all, with the
largest world literature, Maurer could have done better than relying on the old war-horse of "Nala and Damayanti", which continues the tradition of
Lanman's "Sanskrit Reader" of a century ago. Goldman, based as it is on the
"Ramayana" excels in this respect, as does Coulson which builds up to an
appreciation of Kalidasa. Few students these days will be satisfied with the
soupy Nala tale when the Bhagavad Gita, the Kama Sutra, the Upanishads and so
many more can be read in its place. Nonetheless, this is a highly recommended book for those who want a sensible, traditional grammar.

Best book for beginners

I teach Sanskrit in Canada, and I've tried using many different textbooks. My goal is to give the student a basic overview of the major components of Sanskrit as quickly as possible, and teach further using authentic Sanskrit literature. This book does exactly that. Instead of teaching grammar topics in the conventional order, it introduces advanced topics right at the beginning in a simplified way, so that students get used to recognizing their usage in context. It also has more thorough explanations of grammar topics than any book I've seen, and uses familiar English examples for comparison. excellent primer

i've been studying sanskrit on my own for 25 years and i own about a half dozen primers. this is an excellent primer, lots of useful charts and information. the pace of the lessons is reasonable for beginners, though wish the translation exercises were worked out maybe at the back of the book so student could check his/her work. two non-content problems: at $65 it's too pricey, and because of the number of pages (ca 850) the binding is thick and it's hard to keep the book open when working the exercises.

Euclid is celebrated as the father of geometry, and author of the Elements, a book once revered like the Bible, but now a school text. Strangely, Greek manuscripts do not mention Euclid, but speak anonymously of the “author of the Elements”. Did Euclid exist? Was the real author of the Elements a woman, Hypatia? Was she black? The mystery geometry of black Egypt aimed to arouse the soul, and prove equity, as in Plato's story of Socrates and the slave boy. Early Christians had similar beliefs about the soul, but the church changed Christian doctrine to enable its priests to rule. When pagans resisted, the church retaliated violently: it smashed their temples, burnt their libraries, cursed the early beliefs about the soul, and banned philosophy. This plunged Christendom into its Dark Age, but catalysed the Islamic Golden Age. The contrast fuelled envy, and Christian priests incited the Crusades, hoping to grab Muslim wealth—but the Crusades failed beyond Spain. To convert Muslims, who accepted reason, the church now sought mathematics, connecting it to Christian doctrine by changing both. That led to a subtle religious bias in mathematics, and to its racist history. This book is for the layperson concerned that both biases are still being thrust upon schoolchildren today.

This narrative is a perfect example of how even though facts are out in the public, we wont usually connect the dots to realize the lies peddled to us by organized cults. It would have taken immense effort to collect all the facts mentioned in the book. Connecting the dots is the easiest thing.

A systematic annihilation of the myth "most of secular scientific knowledge has originated in Greece". It is the single biggest crime committed against human psych by current secular educators. Many of us would have had a feeling that it is a myth. We can even see the means and opportunity of the church to carry out such a crime through its "world class" universities. After all, even during the age of Internet, authorities get away with lying for several years before truth is uncovered. So it must be very easy in medieval times. The challenge is not finding the means and opportunity. The challenge is finding a motive. You can't really charge them guilty without it. If the answers sound like story-telling, used to preserve lies, you know what trick is at work. Remember, they can’t capture your mind without your consent. Don’t give that consent: keep asking questions, and see how those stories fall apart.
