Released in January 2008, The Architecture of Light is a lighting design textbook that merges fundamental lighting knowledge with graphic techniques for generating and communicating lighting design. The 264-page book is the brainchild of Sage Russell, a lighting designer at San Diego-based Lumia Light Studio and instructor at the Design Institute of San Diego. When asked what inspired him to publish the book, Russell says, "Having taught lighting design to architects and interior designers for seven years, each semester I struggled to provide them a text resource that was practical and applicable in the context of a one-semester lighting education." Specifically created as a tool for design professionals whose primary focus is not lighting design, The Architecture of Light concentrates on visual data to provide a deeper understanding of the lighting decision-making process. Use With Caution

I practice and teach lighting design in New York City, and bought this book to see if it would be useful for my students. As an easy read for a home owner who wants to learn more about lighting, this book is fine. However, I don't recommend this as a design textbook.

The biggest problem is in the explanation of lighting calculations, which is simply wrong because most of them ignore the distance that light must travel between the light source and the point of interest. We all know from experience that the farther away a light source is, the less light it delivers. When distance is introduced it, too, is incorrect. One type of calculation utilizes the Inverse Square of the distance between the light and the target. However, squaring the distance doesn't produce a measurement of square feet, just the result of a mathematical function. If light travels 10 ft., for example, squaring that distance produces the number 100, not 100 sq. ft. Where would those square feet be found?

The general design approach is well written and useful. However, the chapter on calculations should be skipped entirely.

Great intro to lighting

I am building a new LARGE home and wanted to get information to figure out the lighting scheme. This book was actually interesting and enjoyable to read. I have already read dozens of different books to be prepared for the homebuilding process (I will be my own general contractor) and have found this to be one of the most useful with real information and not just buzzwords.

That being said, if the author or publisher is reading this, you MUST do a thorough proofreading before the next printing because there are MANY typos in the book (I would seriously fire whoever was in charge of proofreading!)

I am very happy I bought this book since I really had no background in lighting and this provided a good basis.

In an industry known for confusing acronyms, undeciferable number sequences and cut sheets, this book acts like a road map for understanding the multi faceted world of lighting design. Delightfully straight forward and easy to read, each of Russell's steps is outlined clearly to help teach a general method for approaching lighting a space depending on your end goals rather then a micro managed process of what goes where in each room. The concepts are balanced with doses of real world insight and finished off with a great breakdown of sample fixtures and their applications. Explaination and illustration of cut sheets, lamp details, lighting maps, sample interiors and exteriors all contribute to the book's clarity. Whether you are an industry professional hoping to brush up on your understanding of current technique or a student trying to get a good general introduction to the field this book is sure to be exactly what your looking for.

Devastating critique of neoclassical economics...

I was hesitant to purchase this book largely because of the title (which I know is just as irrational as judging a book by its cover, something I have been taught not to do). But the title made me think this was going to be just another superficial critique of economics from a non-economist. It is easy to criticize a number of the assumptions that crop up in standard economic theory and that seem especially unrealistic to the layperson like me (the notion that humans are nothing but rational utility maximizers for example) or to find empirical evidence which seems to contradict the predictions of economic theory in various respects. You do not have to be an economist or delve very deeply into economic theory to make such criticisms. But it turns out I was very wrong about this book. [There is an updated version of this book available which apparently includes sections about the current financial crisis: Debunking Economics - Revised and Expanded Edition: The Naked Emperor Dethroned?

Steve Keen actually explains neoclassical economic theory, and the foundations of neoclassical economic theory, in more depth in this book than most of the textbooks I have read which makes it an excellent book for anyone who is struggling to understand neoclassical theory. The textbooks often simply present the standard tools of economic theory, such as supply and demand curves, without explaining how they are derived. Steve Keen explains precisely how they are derived and in doing so Steve Keen also offers some truly devastating criticisms of neoclassical theory which cut right to the heart of the theories. The criticisms are especially devastating because they reveal logical inconsistencies within the theories themselves. They are not merely external criticisms based on unrealistic assumptions or contrary empirical evidence. To give just one example, in the second chapter Steve Keen shows that the standard downward sloping aggregate demand curve in price theory is actually inconsistent with the assumption that prices determine distribution. Since Engels curves are going to be different shapes for different income brackets, and since every change in price will shift the distribution of income, we do not wind up with a single downward sloping demand curve but rather with a new demand curve for every single price when we attempt to aggregate individual demand curves. Neoclassical theory is simply inconsistent with itself on this point. We do not in general tolerate logical inconsistency in our theories and Steve Keen does not think we should tolerate it in economics either. Steve Keen applies the same treatment to nearly every aspect of neoclassical theory. Anyone who has struggled through the intermediate micro- and macroeconomic textbooks needs to read this as a necessary corrective. It will not only deepen your understanding of neoclassical economic theory itself but it will reveal a number of serious problems with the theories that the textbooks understandably pass over.

Steve Keen also offers a fairly interesting analysis of Marx. Steve Keen believes that the labor theory of value is simply incorrect (he agrees with standard neoclassical economic theory on this point). What is interesting is that Keen seems to believe that Marx began to question the standard labor theory of value in his late writings as well. Basically the labor theory of value, according to Keen, is based on a dualism between exchange value and use value. This is how Marx was able to solve the problem of surplus value under conditions of equilibrium. Exchange value is determined by the socially necessary labor time needed to reproduce a given commodity (including labor power) which has nothing to do with use-value. Wages, therefore, are determined by the amount of labor necessary to physically reproduce the human being. The human being sells their labor power which has the particular use-value of being able to create value. According to the standard labor theory of value only labor has this property and so all surplus-value is based on unpaid labor (exploitation). Steve Keen argues that the dualism between use-value and exchange value applies equally to capital and that Marx seemed to be moving in this direction himself. This would mean that both labor and capital would be capable of producing surplus-value. Whether you agree or disagree with Keen's analysis (and most Marxists I think will disagree) this is certainly an interesting interpretation of Marx and one worth considering.

In short, this book is highly, highly recommended. For anyone seriously interested in economics this book needs to move to the top of your "to read" list.

Required Reading for Everyone From Econ 101 Students to Top Economists

If I were asked what single expenditure a charitable organization could undertake to improve the world most efficiently, it would be to offer free copies of this book to any student or practitioner of economics who asked for it.

Debunking Economics does just what its title says -- in the very language of mainstream economics, and using that discipline's own methodologies to demonstrate its internal incoherence and self-contradictions.

Run don't walk.

Excellent Starting Point for those Who Doubt

I've read this book a couple of times, once when I was starting out trying to understand economics, once a bit later, after I had a fairly good understanding of what was going on.

Prof. Keen's focus in this book is to establish that microeconomic analysis, which forms the conceptual underpinnings of macroeconomics, breaks down once you try to apply them beyond the individual and to markets as macroeconomics purports to do. He is devastatingly effective in accomplishing this task, at least to anybody like me who has a science or engineering background. Some economists, however, as indicated by some of the more negative reviews, have a hard time accepting what Keen has to say. That's because economics is much more a religion than a science. One negative review, for example, asserts that Keen does not understand mathematics, which is demonstrably not true, as you will quickly find if you actually read the book and sift through the materials he makes available at his blog [...].

What Keen is attacking is not the math of neoclassical economics but some of the key assumptions upon which the mathematical models of neoclassical economics are built. This fact is not lost on defensive neoclassical economists, who try to change the topic by claiming to attack his math (without real explanation).

If you are looking for Keen to attack neoclassical macroeconomics directly, this book would warrant only 2-3 stars. For a full frontal assault on that topic, see Davidson's "The Keynes Solution." That being said, this book is worth reading (and even owning a couple of copies in different media, as I do).

Great First Book

Mysteries are not usually my thing as I have trouble following all the minutia and too many characters. This book does not have either of these. Of course, it was also interesting because I have been to the Sacramento Capital and general downtown area many times as well as the trip to San Jose and could easily picture her descriptions. The story was interesting, the "who-done-it" kept me guessing, and the people seemed real. I will look forward to her second effort!

Better than expected!

A really good book. I will have to read it again to get the most out of it, as I read at night, and due to some heavy-duty meds, I fall asleep right in the middle of a chapter and don't remember half of what I read! There are so many characters I think I will make a chart to keep them straight until my mind catches up. I learned a lot about being a lobbyist. Like I would not want to be one! congrats to Bufo's sister. A talented family!

Loved this book....Fun read. Especially if you are a policy wonk and/or know Sacramento and the State Capitol. But even if you don't, it provides some important insights into the political process/world while being a fun read.

Few places in the world possess greater historical complexity than the culturally diverse region of Southeast Asia. A History of Southeast Asia: Critical Crossroads presents a comprehensive, single-volume history of Southeast Asia from its encounters with agriculture, metallurgy, and religion to the late emergence of the ten states that make up this region today. Breaking from the dominant colonial and nationalist narrative that highlights Southeast Asia’s quest for statehood as its defining characteristic, historian Anthony Reid shifts the primary focus to factors of greater relevance to its inhabitants, such as environmental, religious, social, cultural, demographic, health, and intellectual changes. The result is a fuller and more richly detailed account of the region’s complex and nuanced history.

Reid reveals Southeast Asia’s distinctive gender pattern was challenged first by scriptural religions and later by European models of middle-class domesticity. Also covered is the seventeenth-century impoverishment of the region relative to European society, and Southeast Asia’s “peasantization” during the high colonial era. Concluding chapters focus on transformative events of the twentieth century: from the region’s development as a major battleground for the Pacific War with its aftermath of decolonization and the Cold War to the region’s long-awaited emergence from poverty, dictatorship, and conflict in the final decades of the century. A History of Southeast Asia: Critical Crossroads is indispensable for understanding the historic rhythm of this important crossroads of the Asian continent.

About the Author

Anthony Reid is Professor Emeritus at the College of Asia and the Pacific, Australian National University. He has taught and researched Southeast Asian history for 50 years, in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia and the United States. He was Founding Director of the Asia Research Institute in Singapore. He has authored or edited numerous books on aspects of Southeast Asian history from the 14th to the 21st centuries, including explorations on slavery, freedom, Islam, gender, the Chinese minority and its Jewish analogy, population, and economic history.

Really good book but it needs better maps

I haven't read it all the way through but from what I've read it is very good. I do think it needs some more maps as it describes a lot of places in the book and the maps that are provided are somewhat confusing. But the level of scholarship here is very high.

No Drama Teacher should be without this book!

Drama Structures is an excellent tool that I believe all teachers of Dramatic Arts should be familiar with. This book provides a teacher not only with a flexible manual of how to approach many different issues or topics, but it also equips teachers with the knowledge of how to develop the units further.
Drama Structures is divided up into 4 easy to read sections. Part One focuses on "Drama in Schools: What is Drama?" It Includes information on Drama and the curriculum, the Drama Teacher, and modes of activity. It outlines the reasons we do what we do in the classroom, the type of work that we do, and how to implement creative ideas in our own classrooms.
Part Two puts the Drama Structures into practice using four fully developed lesson plans. The structures are all based on historical and/ or information packed topics and issues that include "The Way West," "Leaving Home," "The Lost Valley," and "The Victorians." These units are designed so that a teacher can develop as little or as much of the structure as they wish, thereby deepening the learning and meaning for all involved participants. Each of these structures include an introduction to the topic and a list of resources for the teacher to investigate. The structures use many of the drama conventions to enhance different types of learners in the classroom: Whole group activities, small group activities, pair work, and individual work. Upon completion of all the exercises found in a structure, the student will have a solid understanding of the chosen topic they are investigating.
Part Three describes issues in "Teaching Drama." This section is directed toward the teacher and offers discussion on planning, using theatre elements, working in role, questioning, discussion and reflection, evaluations and assessment, and other practical considerations.
Part Four is entitled "Structures for Development." This section is subdivided further into three subsections; "Drama as enquiry." This section focuses on why certain people behave as they do; "Small Group Work." This can be used as a good basis on how to get a drama started or to shape new ideas of the topic; "Drama across the curriculum." This section illuminates particular areas of the curriculum and describes how to introduce drama approaches to an inexperienced class.
A lesson commentary is given for each structure found in this book. Furthermore, additional notes and comments are found with every activity presented to the teacher. This book allows for each teacher to individually tailor to the needs of their own classrooms as the structures are extremely adaptable. No dramatic arts teacher should be without the knowledge of this book.

The Heroes gigantic debauchery completely put me off!

I would give this book more stars, if not for the fact the Hero was a total manh*re on a monumental proportions! I am not kidding! The things he did with all those strippers in his house in that bed were disgusting! Add the fact heroine never slept with anyone for 7 years because she loved him so much and he was swimming in women's skirt for all that time is not very romantic nor equal! I want fairness, I want my heroine enjoining sexual life and not holding back where the hero on the other hand is having sex with anyone that moves! This is not sexy not desirable! This is a contemporary romance, hence it should inspire equality and not encourage double standards! Why is the heroine untouched to show the dept of love for the hero, but he cannot have the same for her?...I admit the author made the Hero hard to like.. He calls heroine a "bi*ch" on numerous times and i cannot imagine my significant other calling me that nor I want to read that in my romantic escapism!

WOW! This book is a series, and I for one can’t wait for book two!! These two, Natasha and Josh are combustible to say the least. They both have insecurities, and tempers that get the best of them. With demons of their unforbidden relationship, it’s really taking Josh on a journey he really doesn’t want to deal with! Natasha and her sister, Bridget are two of the funniest characters! They are what sisters should be, honest, and have each other’s backs, no matter what.

Natasha has to deal with her untold truths to Josh, and with being a Psychologist she has the tools; however when dealing with your own issues it’s harder than dealing with her clients issues. This page turner had me enthralled for the first page. This is sexy, erotic and intelligent; not to mention laugh out loud at the antics all the characters get up too. Buckle up, and get ready for a thrilling ride; it’s one I want to continue.

Holy cow amazing

Omg what a cliffhanger. I need the next book right now!!! I cannot tell you how much I loved this book. I've been sitting her tryin to find the perfect words to describe this story. Mystery, passion, heartache, heartbreak, hot sex, dirty talking, alpha male, love, secrets, and yes possible incest. Holy cow this book is full of everything. I literally could not put it down. Natasha and Josh have been above since they were teenagers. And neither of them have been able to find that kind of love since then. Now seven years later they are reunited. And let me tell you the fireworks are astounding. This book will blow you away. Amazing. Truly amazing!
