Views of 19th century Tokyo: Images of a city between visual poetry and idealized reality "This luxurious Japanese bound boxed publication transcends the coffee table cliché by combining beauty with information." ART news Magazine, New York
Literally meaning "pictures of the floating world", ukiyo-e refers to the famous Japanese woodblock print genre that originated in the 17th century and is practically synonymous with the Western world’s visual characterization of Japan. Because they could be mass produced, ukiyo-e works were often used as designs for fans, New Year’s greeting cards, single prints, and book illustrations, and traditionally they depicted city life, entertainment, beautiful women, kabuki actors, and landscapes. The influence of ukiyo-e in Europe and the USA, often referred to as Japonisme, can be seen in everything from impressionist painting to today’s manga and anime illustration. This reprint is made from one of the finest complete original sets of woodblock prints belonging to the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo.
Hiroshige (1797-1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition. Though he captured a variety of subjects, his greatest talent was in creating landscapes of his native Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and his final masterpiece was a series known as "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" (1856-1858). This resplendent complete reprint pairs each of the 120 large-scale illustrations with a description, allowing readers to plunge themselves into Hiroshige’s beautifully vibrant landscapes.

Gorgeous edition at a fabulous price
By P. Vogel
This is a beautifully presented and bound edition of one of the best editions of the Hundred Famous Views of Edo. There may be (slightly) cheaper editions available but they almost certainly reproduce later editions where printers omitted some woodblocks and some of the effects that printers used in the early editions. This book reproduces a very early edition, is bound like a Japanese book, has a great cover, is printed on good quality paper, and is wrapped up in good-looking box with bamboo-like clasps. The notes are brief but provide all the information you'd need to enjoy the prints.

At THIS price? Fantastic!
By Peabody
Taschen never fails to impress, and it certainly has yet again with this collection of Japanese prints.
This book makes a FANTASTIC present or coffee table book-- I can not tell you how it expensive it looks. I would guess the book at a price over $50 if I hadn't seen it here on Amazon for $26. The inside of the book isn't bound to the cover-- the cover is more like an outer shell to the book. My outer cover didnt come with the gold wrapper saying "taschen 30 years' as pictured, but it doesn't matter as its a beautiful hard cover. It is secured closed by a type of traditional asian style clasp as seen in the photo.
The inner book has a gorgeous metallic fiber print cover. The pages are high quality, double folded, and sturdy. The prints are all lovely natural scenes which show the beautiful brush strokes of Japanese painting. Each print is accompanied by a description of the area pictured.
This book is certainly one of the best value purchases I have made on Amazon. I highly recommend it!

A great version of 'One Hundred Views of Edo' ~
By Christopher Barrett
This book is a great gift for any lover of Hiroshige. The book binding is very interesting. The cover has a little hook (the white object above the zero) and then you open the right side of the cover (the part that says Hiroshige). The book itself comes out of the cover. It is bound with string and the pages are folded on top of each other. So there is a gap in between and printing only on one side. It is like a W - the part that opens up represents the readable portions while the opening down is the portion closed to the binding. Also reminds me of greeting cards. It's a bit odd to get used to at first. The paper is a thick parchment like material, possibly a hemp or rice blend to emulate the traditional paper. The finish has a slight sheen, likely since the traditional prints had a dusting of mica.
The prints are copies of the prints in the Tokyo Ota Museum. They comprise one of the most complete collections of original prints of the 100 views of Edo (actually printed in the 1800s). The blocks were created and the prints originally published from 1856 - 1859. They comprise the most famous of Hiroshige's works. Being such a fan of Hiroshige, I even have two framed print reproductions on my wall from this series.
The format is amazing. The first portion of the book covers the history of the era as well as what we know (which is little) of Hiroshige's life. Of course the world at large still doesn't know much about the actual process of how the artists were commissioned (if they just created the blocks and then example prints to offer to the printing companies or if they were given commissions by theaters or nobles). And of course, many original prints do not survive to this day. So a little background is welcome, and the author doesn't get too long winded.
The subsequent section deals with the prints. The print is on the right and the description on the left. What is amazing also is that the authors write not only about the style of the print or the location of the setting, but that they add tidbits such as why their are kites or why the guys is hiding his face in the corner and so on. It is these little add ons that make the prints come to life. (For the record, face hiding guy represents a man embarrassed on not wanting to be seen frequenting a 'ahem' house of pleasure).
This is a remarkable value, and it makes a lovely gift for anyone into art. Even my partner who is an artist herself, and loves the European surrealists, enjoys this book. If you know somebody who isn't quite sold on Ukiyo-e, this might be the book to convince them of the subtle beauty and deceptive simplicity of this art. Bravo Taschen, I love you guys!
