A travelogue by Bill Bryson is as close to a sure thing as funny books get. The Lost Continent is no exception. Following an urge to rediscover his youth (he should know better), the author leaves his native Des Moines, Iowa, in a journey that takes him across 38 states. Lucky for us, he brought a notebook.

With a razor wit and a kind heart, Bryson serves up a colorful tale of boredom, kitsch, and beauty when you least expect it. Gentler elements aside, The Lost Continent is an amusing book. Here's Bryson on the women of his native state: "I will say this, however--and it's a strange, strange thing--the teenaged daughters of these fat women are always utterly delectable ... I don't know what it is that happens to them, but it must be awful to marry one of those nubile cuties knowing that there is a time bomb ticking away in her that will at some unknown date make her bloat out into something huge and grotesque, presumably all of a sudden and without much notice, like a self-inflating raft from which the pin has been yanked."

Yes, Bill, but be honest: what do you really think?

From Publishers Weekly
Journalist Bryson decided to relive the dreary vacation car trips of his American childhood. Starting out at his mother's house in Des Moines, Iowa, he motors through 38 states over the course of two months, looking for the quintessential American small town. "Some of Bryson's comments are hilarious--if you enjoy the nonstop whining wisecracks of a 36-year-old kid," determined PW.

From Library Journal
An expatriate American now living in England chronicles a trip around the United States in which he describes American foibles to the British. The first two chapters capture the tedium of a family vacation and the daffy absurdity of life in the author's home state of Iowa. Midwesterners will grab friends to read choice bits, saying "see." But after these wonderful opening chapters, the author's comic tricks become repetitive: "then I said this outrageous thing; no, not really, but . . . . " While the sometimes irrelevant statistics are interesting, they, too eventually become tedious. As the book grinds on, it descends into a litany of "then I went here, and next I went there." Browsers reading the opening bits will snatch it off the shelves, but many will return it unfinished. ($100,000 promotion; 50,000 copy first printing).

Wicked humour
By Mike Christie
Bryson was born in Des Moines, and moved to England in his early twenties, marrying and settling down there. This book documents a trip by car around America, starting and ending in Des Moines, after many years in the UK. The ostensible theme of the book is a search for the perfect small town; a sort of Ray Bradbury idealization of fifties America. There's no such town, of course, but Bryson just uses the theme as a springboard for some of the funniest descriptions, stories, and digressions I have ever read.
When I started reading this book, I laughed so much my wife wouldn't let me read it in bed. Then she picked it up and discovered how funny it was, and wanted to read it before me. Eventually we compromised, and kept it in the car; the rule was that whoever was driving had to read it to the driver. Several times, however, the reader was laughing so hard that they couldn't get comprehensible words out, and the driver had to pull over to the hard shoulder and grab the book for themselves.
Yes, he's a curmudgeon, as other reviewers here have noticed. That's just his style. He's not deep, either; his occasional ruminations aren't negligible, but he's no Mark Twain. But he has an acidly sharp eye for inanity and stupidity, and his anecdotal technique is flawless.
His other travel books are along much the same lines, but to me this is the funniest, though "A Walk in the Woods" does show he is capable of good introspective writing. "The Lost Continent" is sharp, satirical, acute, and unkind--wickedly funny in every sense of the word.

Depressing and repetitive. Move on to his other works
By Ameri-Aussie
I had high hopes for this book since I thoroughly enjoyed and laughed out loud while reading Bryson's 'In a Sunburned Country'. I was more than a little disappointed after finished `Lost Continent' I came away feeling more than a little disappointed.

Before I bought this book I was puzzled at the contrasting reviews here and I initially took the most of the negative reviews with a grain of salt. I figured these were written by people who mostly just took offense way too easily and were unable to laugh at themselves as Americans. I have to say though, after reading the book I find myself agreeing with some of the negative reviews of this book.

First off, as an American that has lived overseas for 3 years now, I feel I'm more than capable of looking at America with an objective eye. I'm completely aware of America's many shortcomings - ie. the propensity for urban sprawl, the seemingly declining interest in it's rich history, the ever growing dependence on technology and increasing laziness that invariably comes with it etc. etc.

Having said that, I still regard this book primarily as just one endless, tiring, repetitive rant by an unhappy man. One would be hard pressed to find more than a couple instances where Bryson spent more than three of four sentences at a time describing anything he found ENJOYABLE. As one reviewer pointed out, Bryson comes across as being exactly like the kind of people he constantly complains about in this book...rude, ignorant, and, just like Bryson himself, overweight (apparently he hasn't stepped in front of a mirror lately). One has to wonder why someone would put out a book that is so consistently sour in tone. If I had just finished such a thoroughly unsatisfying and unhappy trek as this, I would be hard pressed to come up with a good reason (other than a quick buck perhaps) to actually write a book about it. Let me get one thing straight, if this were a book about Canada or anywhere else outside the U.S. I would feel the same way. Yes, there are a few funny passages in his book, but his air of superiority along with the overuse of metaphors pretty much dampen it at times. As demonstrated in `In a Sunburned Country', his strength lies in sharing facts and history of the places he finds himself in, and the humor is always much more engaging when it isn't over the top and written as if he's trying to impress himself.

There was a span of about 12 years between the writing of `Lost Continent' and `In a Sunburned Country', and it shows. This is a younger Bryson, a man who seems to have a problem with every little detail, and it becomes increasingly tedious and irritating as the book goes on. He rarely displays anything other than contempt for the places he finds himself in. A couple of other reviewers also made valid points when they found it curious that (with the exception of his Iowa drug buddy) he never manages to engage anyone in anything resembling a meaningful conversation to actually get a handle on their mindset (as he did in "In A Sunburned Country' for instance). His interactions with locals are mostly limited to ordering food at local restaurants and asking for directions. He seems perfectly content coming to conclusions about entire groups of people based on no real substance and communication whatsoever.

In this book, sadly, he comes across as nothing more than a sarcastic, anti-social loner with a bone to pick with just about everyone and everything. Any remotely kind words he has about anything (and they are few and far between) are all but smothered by the sour tone of the book as a whole. I SO wish I could recommend this book for others to read, but I'd be lying if I said it's time well spent.

Young Bryson Can't Match the Mature
By Wayne A. Smith
This is my third Bill Bryson book. Thank goodness this was not my first, for I probably would not have picked up "In a Sunburned Country," and "A Walk In The Woods."
Where Bryson's latest books are droll, witty and endearing, "The Lost Continent" is frequently petty, forced and mean. In this book Bryson travels around 38 states in a beat up Chevette, often through small towns and out of the way places not usually visited by many. He didn't have a very good trip.
Most of this book revolves around the author's put-downs of people he sees and caustic comments about places he visits. After a few hundred pages, the observations seem awfully gratuitous. Where disappointments, angst and difficult people were treated with amusement in his later books, here he often dismisses similar trials here with the brilliant and trenchant observation "FU". Not much authorship in those moments.
Not to say that there aren't some funny passages. Several times on the train, I found myself reading out loud. However, I also found myself speed reading ahead several times, an unfortunate first for a Bryson Book. Bryson's later works also weave a good deal of interesting historical background and place descriptions into the book. That is almost totally missing in this effort.
He occasionally comes up with some awfully good writing. For example, he described driving toward the mountains in Colorado as "driving into the opening credits of a Paramount Picture." (sic). Unfortunately, there are not enough of those moments and instead too many paragraphs describing how he had another bad meal in another bad town with too many ice cream and pizza parlors and not enough ambiance or fetching waitresses to suit his tastes. Bryson has produced much better. But don't let this book (or review) put you off an author whose books can be very satisfying companions. Just go for his more recent stuff.

By Cristin L. Day
I bought the e-book version for my class and was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to use in the Kindle app on my iPad Mini. I have another app and textbook that I am using with another service and it is terrible in comparison!

The book itself is also easy to read and, overall, enjoyable. Is it one I'd read again and again? No. But the ease in which it discusses the topic of lifespans is helpful and enjoyable if you have to read it for class.

By Mtn. Man 51
This book clearly states not for sale, Instructor review copy, Protected by U.S. Copyright as well as having warnings not to sell it on the world wide web that were blacked out on the cover and inside pages. The back cover also clearly states NOT FOR SALE Job Control #50058.
The time it took to cover these warnings with black tape makes it clear that it was intentional and the book was sold illegally.
This book should have never been sold, and I am now unable to resell it once I have finished the course.

Man, You Can

"Men don't cook." People tell me this all the time. That's a load of bull--we've been charring giant slabs of meat ever since we discovered fire.

The difference now is that we have better things to do. Why slave over a hot stove when we could be cooking up plans for a golf outing? Or warming up at the gym? Or making things sizzle in the bedroom?

Here's why: because sometimes you want a break from the local Burger-Rama. Sometimes you want a decent home-cooked meal.

Not worth it, you say? It is if you use the can. The can is fast. The can is healthy. It's even cheaper than that Burger-Rama mega-deal. The can holds the secret to every great guy meal.

When you come home from an insane day at work and open the fridge to find nothing but a slice of 3-week-old pizza, remember the can. If the guys are coming over to watch the game and you need some food to throw at the TV, turn to the can. When your girl insists that you cook something for a change, you've got it in the can.

With the recipes in this book, you can easily whip up 50 simple, healthy meals. This food does everything from prevent heart disease and prostate cancer to boost your immune system and energy levels. And it tastes damn fine, too. You don't need a culinary degree to make it. You don't need any fancy ingredients. All you need is a can opener--and an appetite. No problem, right?

Good for a clueless college student
By TerriZ
I bought this cook book and 2 others like it for my 20 something young sons for Christmas. They were constantly calling me asking for recipes and cooking advice so I thought I would give them some cookbooks. These covered board books spell out every recipe in language a clueless teenager should be able to understand. Plus they are easy to wipe clean. There a pictures of everything and a grocery shopping list to help. The recipes are simple, easy and seems like they would fill up a hungry college student. None of the recipes require weird spices, foods or utensils --they are all user/student friendly. My sons has successfully tried a few of the recipes and didn't burn anything down.
I also bought a Man and A Tailgate plan for my sports nut.

Excellent entry point into the world of cooking
By Amazon Customer
I bought this for my gentleman friend (age 56) who cooks meat on the grill but not much else. He was ecstatic. I was afraid he might be offended/insulted by the toddler style cardboard pages, but he was pleased that he could throw it (literally) in his truck and take it into the grocery store on his way home from work without destroying it. The food is surprisingly good and only requires the meat department and canned goods aisles, nothing else. Does not require any kitchen equipment other than pots and pans. Not exactly haute cuisine, but for someone who wants something other than drive through burgers and pizza delivery for dinner once in a while and doesn't want to spend forever trying to buy ingredients and spices and cook, this is an excellent book.

Great Book for the Beginners, or someone looking for simple, good meals
By Modest Man Mike
I bought this as a gift for my nephew and i'm glad i did. Its a great starter book for a young man that is new to cooking. The ingredients are simple, easy to find, and accessible to most. Its not a gourmet cook book by any means, but its a good book to help a young person get more comfortable with being in the kitchen and fending for themselves. I can see this book as being perfect for a teenager or a college kid making meals for themselves. I'm sure after mastering these recipes a person would probably graduate to more complicated and interesting dishes, and i think that this book provides that confidence and stepping stone to get there. Not that it ventures into that territory, but once a person gains that confidence that they can actually cook something other than a hot pocket that actually provides decent nutrition and sustenance such as the things in this book, they will be more willing to branch out to other great meals/recipes. Bottom line, this book is a great start for some one new to cooking, or looking for easy, less complicated meals that are simple to make.

I also bought the "Second Helping" follow up to this book at the same time and HIGHLY recommend it. I'm not saying that this book is bad, but I think the recipes in the 2nd Helping book are allot better and a little more appealing to my tastes. I highly recommend buying them in a pair. That is what i did. These books are STURDY. They come with those THICK pages like you would find in a kids book. So i'm sure you can prevent ruining the book with accidental splashes and spills, which fits right in a beginner.

I might buy another set for myself just to get quick and easy ideas for myself.

For the Disney music fans
By Kristen La Madrid
This book contains 240 Disney from various forms of entertainment, including: 1) animated features/featurettes, 2) live action, 3) television, 4) Disney theme parks, & 5) theatrical production. It is likely that this edition was published before "Tangled" & "Frozen", since no songs from those movies are included in this book. There is one index by song title & another by show title. Most, if not all, of the songs seem to be written in the original key. Although there are a lot of songs, a lot of them are classics from older shows; therefore, the millenial generation may not appreciate some of these songs. My only disappointment is that there are only 2 songs from The Hunchback of Notre Dame & only 3 songs from Pocahontas. Over all, it's a good investment for the Disney music fans.

this is great because most
By Mr. Freeze
As far as fake books go, this is great because most, if not all, songs are in their original keys. Many fake books put things into "easy" keys, this seems to stay true to the keys and rhythms of the original songs.

Such Fun
By Jeremy
This is a great purchase, I love to arrange the songs for my students and myself to play for fun. My students enjoy the songs because they know them, and they also get to learn many chords such as augmented and diminished chords as well as key changes all under the guise of fun Disney songs! The students can also play melodies that they are familiar with and the songs have been meet with success so far.

Book Description

ArcGIS Desktop is the leading desktop solution for performing GIS tasks. The ArcPy site package enables Python programmers to access the GIS functionality provided by ArcGIS Desktop to automate geoprocessing tasks. Whether you are new to ArcGIS or a seasoned professional, you almost certainly spend time each day performing various geoprocessing tasks. This book will teach you how to use the Python programming language to automate these ArcGIS Desktop geoprocessing tasks and make you a more efficient and effective GIS professional.

The book begins with the fundamentals of starting to use Python with ArcGIS, followed by recipes on managing map documents and layers, including how to find and fix broken data links in these files. The focus then shifts to automation of map productions and finding, retrieving, and executing geoprocessing tools.

In the second part of the book, you will learn to create custom geoprocessing tools and how to use the Attribute and Location tools to select specific features. Next, the book covers usage of the ArcPy Data Access Module, along with various key aspects of geoprocessing.

The third part of the book covers topics for advanced users including the REST API, and also teaches you to use Python with ArcGIS Pro. The book finishes with appendices covering how to automate Python scripts, and the five things that should be at the back of every GIS programmer’s mind.

What you will learn
  • Manage your map document files, layer files, feature classes, and tables
  • Programmatically update layer properties and symbology
  • Find and fix broken data links in your map document files
  • Automate map production, printing, and the creation of PDF map books
  • Develop custom geoprocessing tools that can be shared with others

I took a Python scripting class a few years ago but haven't used it in quite a while. I needed a refresher on Python scripting for an ArcGIS upcoming project and this book was perfect. The fundamentals were nicely reviewed and the rest of the book is full of easy to reference practical examples. I especially like the "How it works..." sections that explain the finer points of the code. This book may be a little challenging for those unfamiliar with object-oriented programming, but I highly recommend it for anyone who has some Python experience.

So many useful examples, user-friendly cookbook... But be aware of version
    By Nobuko Conroy
I haven't gone through all the exercises yet, but so far I liked this book very much. There are many useful examples which you could readily apply to your daily jobs (if you are GIS user), such as exporting a map to pdf or image file, automating printing process, and creating geoprocessing tools, etc. Many of the examples are not too long to follow, and very user friendly (the book comes with all the necessary electronic files, including codes). Considering the fact that the first edition came out only in February 2013, this second edition came out rather fast; I guess there's much update since then and also many requests for the updated version (so, authors, thank you for your quick action!). One drawback was that I'm using ArcGIS ver. 10.1 (the book is written for ver.10.3) and some scripts did not work (e.g. Chapter 6, reading from a text file and plotting wildfire points). For those parts, ideally, the authors could have clarified which script would or would not work in which version of ArcGIS. Overall, I would recommend this cookbook to those who have taken intro Python class for ArcGIS, and want to explore further.

    Perfect for beginners
    By DANIEL GIL
It's a perfect book to start learning arcpy. The exercises are interesting but not too complicated so you don't feel frustated and every step is explained so you can't get lost.

After doing an arcpy online course (beginner level) I purchased the book Arcpy and ArcGis- Geospatial Analysis With Python but I think it's not the best option for beginners. I recommend Programing ArcGIS with Python Cookbook for beginners.

Rob Delaney is a father, a husband, a comedian, a writer. He is the author of an endless stream of beautiful, insane jokes on Twitter. He is sober. He is sometimes brave. He speaks French. He loves women with abundant pubic hair and saggy naturals. He has bungee jumped off of the Manhattan Bridge. He enjoys antagonizing political figures. He listens to metal while he works out. He likes to fart. He broke into an abandoned mental hospital with his mother. He played Sir Lancelot in Camelot. He has battled depression. He is funny as s***. He cleans up well. He is friends with Margaret Atwood. He is lucky to be alive.

Read these hilarious and heartbreaking true stories and learn how Rob came to be the man he is today.

    Praise for Rob Delaney

    “Hilarious, raw.”—Rolling Stone

“Unlike some books by comics, [Rob] Delaney’s volume offers a rich, deeply considered (and yes, funny) look at his life, from jumping off a bridge to crashing a car while drunk to getting and staying sober while other friends died trying. A great read by any standard, but even more so for including stories about needing (and failing) to find a bathroom while jogging.”—E! Online

“One of the most hilarious bundles of words we have ever read.”—Vice

“A book as funny, sincere, weird, wet, and wonderful as Rob Delaney himself.”—Jimmy Kimmel

“Heart-wrenchingly true tales exuding self-effacing whimsy and smart-guy charm . . . There are plenty of books by male comedians about being drunk and stupid and depressed and getting out of the hole they dug for themselves, but this book feels like you are reading the account told by a grownup who actually learned something about himself worthy enough to share in book form.”—Splitsider

“Delaney has a knack for pinpointing what’s hilarious and sad about adolescent bed-wetting and his own abundant body hair, but somehow the darkest chapters [in this book] make you laugh hardest.”—Entertainment Weekly

“Rob Delaney has done it again! Actually, this is his first book, so he has not ‘done it again.’ Actually, this book is so good, I doubt he will be able to do it again. He’s peaked.”—Judd Apatow

“Rob’s transition from tweets to book is like a gold medal sprinter winning the marathon the next day. I am jealous and angry.”—Seth Meyers

“WARNING: This book may cause involuntary seepage. Some funny, funny, funny, funny s*** from the most dangerous man on Twitter. The fact that he’s just as funny in long form makes me want to vomit with envy.”—Anthony Bourdain

“All it takes to be as funny as Rob Delaney is luck, good timing, deep compassion, reckless imaginative agility, a flawless grasp of the inner workings of language, and criminally vast quantities of mojo. What a jerk.”—Teju Cole, author of Open City

“Surprisingly moving . . . Candid and conversational, this memoir shows there’s more to Delaney than pithy tweets.”—Kirkus Reviews

We got our first microwave when I was ten. I’m not even sure if I was warned that it was dangerous. My parents must have thought I should understand, by that age, that if something can make ice-cold water scalding hot faster than any machine in history, I shouldn’t monkey with it. The microwave’s primary use was to make hot water for my mom’s nightly tea. It took us years to collectively figure out that a kettle was a vastly superior tool to make tea. I guess our understanding of technology evolved backward. It’s not odd, I suppose, considering that my dad grew up very poor and my mom grew up in relative wealth. My dad spent a portion of his childhood in Catholic orphanages and foster homes in Boston—even though his parents were still alive—and for part of her youth, my mom’s home had an elevator in it. My dad’s mom wasn’t terribly interested in parenting and ran around on my grandfather, disappearing for years at a time. My dad’s father was very poor and wrestled with alcoholism, so sometimes his four kids—of whom my dad was the second youngest—were placed in an orphanage or foster home for a year or two. Fuck. Now that I’m a dad, I wonder how you could arrive at the decision to let your kids out of your sight like that. Physical distance between me and my son is my least favorite thing in the world.

My mom grew up in a decidedly different situation. She was the fourth of five children in a wealthy Catholic family who lived an hour north of Boston. To this day, my family spends a couple of weeks every summer at the beach house her parents bought back in the 1950s. My mom went to Catholic school from first grade all the way through her senior year at Regis College, just outside of Boston. She has a fantastic story about a nun brutally yanking her pigtails when she laughed at a friend’s antics one time in first grade, the way a beautiful little girl in first grade fucking should. A friend of my uncle’s, at the same school, had his ear boxed by a nun until it bled. Desks in the classroom were set up in order of the students’ grades, so there was quite literally a “stupid corner.” It was a phenomenal school.

When I was in sixth grade, I did not sit in the stupid corner. We didn’t have one, but I wouldn’t have been placed in it anyway. I loved to read, so I loved English and Social Studies. I coasted to good grades in all the other subjects. That changed in later years, when I discovered shoplifting, cigarettes, girls, and booze, and allowed my self-will a little more free reign. But just because I did well in sixth grade didn’t mean I had any kind of street smarts or would be inclined to obey the rules of thermodynamics as they applied to microwave ovens.

My mom and dad had settled in Marblehead, Massachusetts, right before my third birthday. Marblehead is comprised of two peninsulas that stick out into Massachusetts Bay, about a half an hour north of Boston. I would ride my bicycle around its perimeter most days after high school. That took a little over an hour. It’s tiny. But it’s beautiful, has lots of trees and beaches, and is filled with white people.

I knew a microwave oven was dangerous, in theory, and that you weren’t supposed to put certain things in it. I knew, for example, that metal did not belong in the microwave. But what about an egg? It seemed like you really probably shouldn’t put one in there, what with the fact that an egg is totally sealed and is soft and wet in the middle and hard on the outside.

One day, after school, I decided to put an egg in the microwave and see what happened. I ceremoniously placed the egg in the center of the microwave, closed the door, and punched in one minute. Then I watched intently as a fair amount of nothing happened. I didn’t want to tempt fate, so I took the apparently unchanged egg out of the microwave, set it on the counter, and tried to dream up another experiment. Then I heard a quiet humming. It was coming from the egg. The egg was humming at a very high pitch, higher than human vocal cords can replicate, like a tiny little egg-kettle. I bent down to examine the egg and listen more closely to its song. “Eggs shouldn’t hum,” I thought. “Is it in pain?” Was this a fertilized egg and had I unknowingly tortured a chick and it was now screaming for death’s release in its tiny prison?

I took a butter knife from a drawer and held it over the egg. I gently tapped the egg. It immediately exploded with a loud WHOMP. An amazing volume of foul-smelling scrambled egg sprayed out. Much more foulness than one solitary egg should hold. It was all over the walls and the cupboards and the ceiling. Bits of scrambled egg stuck to my face, burning me. I brushed the egg bits off, horrified and injured. I was wide-eyed and in shock at what I had wrought.

The amount of scrambled yellow matter that blew out of the egg was roughly enough to fill a large mixing bowl that you’d use to prepare cake batter. Science-wise, it was as fascinating as watching a shuttle launch or discovering that there are fish miles below the surface of the sea that produce their own light. I now knew precisely how and why it was a bad idea to microwave an egg.

I slowly sponged egg off the walls, cupboards, and ceiling. I opened the windows because it smelled disgusting—a sick, wrong smell that called to mind a hospital trash barrel. I can still re-create the smell in my mind. It smelled much, much worse than if someone farted directly into your nose and mouth. The cleaning process wasn’t a panicked one; the smell was such that, even as I climbed up and stood on top of counters to clean egg bits out of the ceiling molding, I knew my parents were going to find out. As pretty as the scrambled eggs looked, the smell immediately alerted you to the fact that they’d been prepared in an unconventional manner. It fucking stank, like a dog fart in a slaughterhouse, or if an old man prepared a cottage cheese soufflé in his underpants. There was no hiding what I’d done.

Additionally, I now had two good-sized burns on my face. One on my forehead and one beside my nose. When my mom came home, I told her what had happened. I couldn’t not; her home smelled like a tomb and her son had suppurating bloody wounds on his forehead and on the side of his nose. She just gave me a look that said, “Wow, you can fuck up in ways I’d never even imagined,” and told me not to do it again.

My wounds blistered and everyone in school asked me what had happened. I was too embarrassed to tell the truth, so I told people that my sister had thrown a potato peeler at me. Let’s pause: How fucking awful and unrealistic is that as an excuse? Excuses are not my strong suit. Plus, what if she really had thrown a potato peeler at my face? Wouldn’t that speak to a home-life situation that was more “embarrassing” than adolescent curiosity gone wrong? Also, my sister is, and was, one of the gentlest people I have ever met and she would never throw a napkin at someone, let alone a potato peeler.

A few days after my microwave experiment, I was sitting in class and felt a gentle “pop” on my forehead and hot liquid ran down my face. It was the burn on my forehead just tenderly exploding, of its own volition, on my eleven-year-old face. As the pus—filled with healing white blood cells—trickled down my face, I thought, “I deserve this.”

    ma vie avec les juifs

In Marblehead, Massachusetts, there are a lot of Jewish people doing all kinds of Jewish things all over the place. I’m Catholic, but I went to the Jewish community center for nursery school, so I witnessed much Jewish activity from an early age. I blew the shofar, ate challah, spun dreidels, and even had my penis customized in keeping with Abraham’s covenant with G-d. (I omitted the “o” in that last word out of respect for my Jewish readers, even though, as a Catholic, I can write that word all day long if I want. But I don’t, because I’m not a serial killer. Plus I have a family and a job.)

On my first day of nursery school at the JCC, my dad, who grew up in Catholic orphanages and foster homes (i.e., not a Jew), accompanied me for the first hour or so. Other parents were with their kids too, to ease the transition from hiding behind Mommy’s skirt to socializing with other dirty human children. The first activity our teacher, Ms. Sherry, led us in was a song to learn one another’s names.

The class would sing (to the tune of “Frère Jacques”), “Where is Robby? Where is Robby?” It was then my duty to stand and sing, “Here I am! Here I am!” Which I did, beautifully I’m sure.

The class then replied with, “Very nice to meet you. Very nice to meet you. Please sit down.”

After my angelic solo, they moved to a boy named Andrew.

“Where is Andrew? Where is Andrew?”

I stood up and announced to the class, “ANDREW’S DEAD.” A not-dead little boy named Andrew immediately began crying and his father ran and scooped him up to protect him from any further terrifying bombshells the scary gentile interloper might decide to drop.

The reason I announced Andrew’s passing was because my grandparents’ dog had moved on to that big kennel in the sky a few days prior. His name was Andrew. I’d assumed Ms. Sherry was singing about him.

Today I live in Los Angeles, California, which has even more Jewish people than Marblehead. To be honest, I wouldn’t even think of living somewhere that wasn’t swarming with Jews.

Not long ago I leapt out of bed at about 6:30 a.m. and went for a run in a residential part of Hollywood. When I was a few miles from my home my bowels sent an urgent cable to my brain, apologizing for the short notice and saying that they’d be emptying themselves in one minute or less; the location was up to me. I frantically searched for an alley or a dumpster I could hide behind. Nothing. Two parked cars I could crouch between? No. It would be a terrible neighborhood in which to play hide-and-seek or smoke pot surreptitiously as a teenager—no little nooks for sneaky behavior anywhere. It was particularly ill-suited for public adult shitting. The one plus—and it was a big one—was that it was so early in the morning. No one was around, in any direction. I knew that whatever horror was about to ensue, it would be over quickly. I crouched in the gutter at the end of a driveway that led to the garage of a home that actual people lived in, and shit furiously and hatefully into the street. I began to know relief.

My relief was short lived, however, because when I looked up from my pathetic al fresco bio-vandal squat, I locked eyes with a Hasidic woman who had materialized across the street. She was paralyzed by what she saw. We gazed into each other’s souls and silently agreed that I was the worst person in the history of humanity and that my name belonged nowhere near the Book of Life.

    Rob Delaney: No Filler
    By J. Edgar Mihelic, MBA
I only know of Rob Delaney because of Twitter. He is one of the funniest people I have come across. He is able to pack a lot into those 140 characters. He’s a little raunchy on there, so don’t let your kids follow him.
On that site, he has been promoting his book. Heavily. I figured, since I like what he does with the short form, I’d read what he has to do with the long form.

He does pretty well, but I have to warn you. The book is funny. But that’s not all it is. It is deep and thoughtful and poignant. Delaney writes with the best of the comic memoirists of the past couple of years: Oswalt, Silverman, Brand, and Fey. What makes these people tick, to generalize is often more interesting than the short things that you see that make you laugh. Their lives have created the angle in which they see the world and explain it to their audience.

This book is more than funny because Delaney opens up his life to the reader. He is honest about his faults: the bed wetting; the substance abuse; the hooking up with and falling in love with random Dutch women. And through this, he is able to bring light to his humor.

It is, broadly, a narrative about addiction and recovery, but it isn’t heavy-handed or cloying. Delany’s smart, and funny, and you should read his book. You might just see some of yourself in it. Or you might not. Either way, you will laugh.

Some notes. It is relatively short, so if you’re like me and you start reading and you can’t put it down, you won’t stay up all night. Finally, the subtitle is misleading. I found no references Delaney being a Cabbage, and unfortunately there is no index to verify my misgivings.

    Yes Rob, yessss.

Thoroughly enjoy Rob's voice. Funny! Insightful. Unexpected. Turnip. My boyfriend got annoyed with me reading passages out loud to him while we were on vacation (but he always laughed at them in the end!). I read this while I was in the middle of watching Catastrophe which made me feel like Catastrophe was his real life and I really just want everything to work out for him. He's just likeable. Fast read too!

One thing I hate is the tweets on the chapter pages running off the page. Can't stand an unfinished

The most real book one will ever read and enjoy.

In so many of the reviews I've read, they speak of the humor. I literally laughed out loud numerous times as Rob is incredibly funny - great thing since he is a comedian. That said, this book is far more than a "make me laugh" book. It is raw. A bathing in salt after an acid burn type of raw. This man has been through hell and back; granted, the hell is mostly of his own making, and that is what makes it even more raw. He takes complete responsibility for this. I respect him so much more for doing so. He came out the other side. He is a cautionary tale which is why he wrote his painful story. I can only imagine how many lives he has touched - telling them to pull their heads out and pay attention. To stop hurting themselves and their loved ones. He appears to be wonderful human, father and husband. I love his feelings towards deadbeat dads which I have, as, sadly does my daughter. I did much better with my son's father. Rob - if you read these, please know what a class act you are. Thank you to Jimmy Kimmel for having you on his show (I would leave my husband for Jimmy - LOVE HIM) which is where I was first introduced to you. I'm a fan for life. This book should be on everyone's Kindle, Nook, Ipad, coffee table . . . It's fabulous. God Bless Rob Delaney.
